Job description
At Jumbo we do everything we can to offer delicious affordable and responsible food for everyone. As a Machine Learning Engineer you contribute to this every day by building smart optimization models that improve our last-mile planning and help us make better use of drivers time and delivery capacity.
Your role requires finding a balance between an efficient delivery operation and meeting our customers needs. By doing so you will be able to provide the best possible delivery experience to our customers while ensuring that the deliveries remain sustainable. For example by providing better insights into when we will arrive to the customer smaller time windows reducing delivery costs allowing for a later cut-off and providing the driver with more time to deliver the groceries.
Your key responsibilities:
- Optimize delivery routes to improve efficiency costs and customer satisfaction
- Develop machine learning models to predict capacity and improve planning decisions
- Allocate orders to the most efficient fulfillment and delivery locations
- Improve how we use drivers time and space in delivery vans
- Build and maintain scalable backend services for planning and optimization
- Solve complex optimization problems with many dynamic parameters and constraints
- Collaborate with engineers and supply chain experts to translate business needs into solutions
- Continuously improve last-mile performance balancing operational efficiency and customer experience
- Coach and support other team members helping them grow in their technical skills and measure and optimize their impact

Youll join a driven IT Development team in Veghel part of our Tech department with 2 backend engineers a full stack engineer and a junior machine learning engineer. A small focused team where you learn fast take ownership and make real impact on our last-mile performance.
Profile
- A strong foundation in mathematics and statistics including probability linear algebra and optimization comes naturally to you
- Designing and validating models is something you do with a clear understanding of experimentation hypothesis testing and bias detection
- End-to-end thinking defines your work from modeling to deployment evaluation and continuous improvement
- A broad range of techniques from regression and tree-based models to optimization and neural networks is part of your toolkit
- Clean production-ready Python code is your standard with a focus on architecture testing maintainability and applying design patterns and maintainable abstractions
- Critical thinking is second nature: you challenge assumptions and make decisions based on data and scientific evidence
- You enjoy sharing knowledge and supporting others for example by coaching other team members
We offer
- A gross salary between 5.900 - 7.600 per month (based on 40 hours).
- An annual bonus of max 75% of your annual salary based on organizational goals.
- 30 days of paid holiday (with the opportunity to buy or sell days of paid holiday) and 8% holiday allowance. You build up a pension through participation in the Pension Fund for the Food Industry.
- An allowance for your travel expenses ( 0.21 cents per kilometer with a maximum of 35 kilometers one way). We like to work together in the office but you can also work partly from home.
