About the job

A Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for performing directing and supervising all aspects of mechanical engineering including but not limited to HVAC hydronic piping and energy studies on multidiscipline building design projects of moderate to large scope for commercial and government facilities.

General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performing all aspects of mechanical engineering design (specifically HVAC engineering and design) as a Senior Mechanical Engineer including Conceptual Studies Program Requirements Design Analyses Calculations Equipment selection and layout and System selection and layout
  • Meeting with clients to prepare and/or validate proposed scope of work
  • Providing oversight and coordination of mechanical engineering projects and the mechanical engineering portion of multidiscipline projects and working with assigned project managers to meet clients budget contract fees goals objectives and deadlines
  • Coordinating supervising and communicating all aspects of mechanical design within multidisciplinary teams to ensure that mechanical design details integrate properly with all other disciplines represented on the design team
  • Communication with the Contractor on DesignBuild projects to verify suitability of systems selected
  • Directing supervising training and ensuring quality control of junior mechanical engineers and designers
  • Ensuring staff compliance with quality control policies and procedures
  • Managing and supervising mechanical engineering support services during the bidding process i.e. preparing addenda amendments open bids tabulate bids etc.
  • Managing and supervising mechanical engineering construction phase services including representing the firm onsite answering RFIs reviewing shop drawings preparing record drawings etc.
  • Coordinating with building commissioning services as required
  • Working with responding to and taking direction from Project Managers Design Managers Managing Principals Operations Directors and Senior Management
  • Working independently with limited direction but collaboratively with other engineers and designers
  • Mentoring and monitoring the professional development of junior mechanical engineering staff
  • Assist in presenting projects to clients contractors project team members AHJs and members of the public through all stages of the project
  • Actively support Company marketing and business development activities
  • Establish and maintain positive client relationships
  • Provide technical guidance to mechanical staff
  • Assisting Department Director and Department Head in developing new and/or revised processes and procedures
  • Representing the Department Head (DH) when the DH is unavailable
  • Leading staff training sessions
  • Providing input to Department Head on staff annual performance reviews

Project responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performing Project Manager duties as assigned
  • Serve in the role of Design Manager on projects as assigned
  • Responsible for discipline design and documentation of building mechanical systems
  • Develop discipline design approach and methodology
  • Develop discipline project plan and production methodology
  • Preparing accurate complete and codecompliant mechanical drawings and specifications for schematic design development and construction document submittals.
  • Design control P&IDs for monitoring of equipment and sequence of operation for systems
  • Reviewing calculations and all work products produced by mechanical engineers and mechanical EI/EITs assigned to the project
  • Reviewing all drawings produced by technicians assigned to the project
  • Preparing scope and fee proposals for the mechanical portion of multidiscipline projects or singlediscipline mechanicalonly projects
  • Assist MP and PM in development of project proposals budgets & schedules
  • Perform discipline QA/QC reviews on assigned projects
  • Review and approve discipline code analysis
  • Develop discipline specifications
  • Respond to RFIs Dr Check comments etc.
  • Visit the construction site to review installation and conformance including punch listing
  • Backcheck discipline QC/gray team comments
  • Adhere to project budget and schedule
  • May require domestic and foreign travel

Education Technology And Experience

  • Graduate of an ABETaccredited 4 5 or 6year engineering program in one of the following disciplines: Mechanical Engineering (Building design focus) Mechanical Engineering Technology (Building design focus) Architectural Engineering (Mechanical or HVAC engineering focus) or Architectural Engineering Technology (Mechanical or HVAC engineering focus)
  • Post graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering will be given additional consideration
  • Must be a fully licensed Professional Engineer in at least one US state preferably in the local jurisdiction and NCEES registration is preferred
  • Understanding of sustainable design principles and design practices with LEED AP accreditation preferred
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP) Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) or HighPerformance Building Design Professional (HBDP) certifications are desirable
  • Other ASHRAE certifications are desirable
  • Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) certification from ASPE is desirable
  • Additional certifications such as CDT CCS or CCCA are encouraged to reflect personal growth in the profession and an ever increasing knowledge base to enhance the design and documentation process
  • Active participation in NSPE ASHRAE or other related professional organizations is desirable
  • A Senior Mechanical Engineer should be able to effectively utilize current company software programs for word processing email accounting and information management through the Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Working familiarity with design and production software to a point of being able to understand the capabilities and limitations of the programs and interact with the support staff in their use of the software is highly desirable.
  • A Senior Mechanical Engineer should typically have 15 years or more of significant design and practice experience in a leadership role with a Mechanical Engineering firm or a multidiscipline Architectural & Engineering firm with substantial knowledge of applicable mechanical plumbing and energy codes and standards.
  • Experience with energy modeling may be given additional consideration.
  • Experience as a lead designer or Mechanical Engineer in federal state municipal healthcare commercial higher education or similar projects plus experience in Design/Build and CM at Risk project delivery methods is desirable.
  • For Mechanical Engineers assigned to our Science Technology division experience with laboratory life sciences industrial data centers and good manufacturing practices (GMP) cleanroom mechanical design may be given additional consideration.

Workplace Flexibility

We have selected two as common days in the office to nurture collaboration and innovation and to support learning and growth through engagement with colleagues. Physical Requirements

Work is sedentary and often performed in an office setting. Work area is lighted heated and ventilated. This position may require extended periods of standing sitting as well as some repetitive movements bending and lifting of minimal weight.
