Weekly Hours FT: 3040 hours per week

Overall Position Summary and Objectives

Contractor will independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Cancer Institute Center for Cancer Research. The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services.

Min Education Masters

Certifications & Licenses

  • Ph.D. in Biology Life Sciences or a related discipline.
  • Five years of specialized experience plus a Bachelors degree is equivalent to a Ph.D.
  • Three years of specialized experience plus a Masters degree is equivalent to a Ph.D.

Field of Study Miscellaneous Biology

Software Proficiency in the use of computers and computer programs including expertise in Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word PowerPoint Excel) Powerpoint

Skills

  • Research experience in immunology and/or molecular biology
  • Ability to learn new techniques and teach known techniques to others.
  • Knowledge of proper laboratory techniques disposal methods laboratory safety procedures and universal precautions.
  • Ability to work independently on projects.
  • Excellent analytical organizational interpersonal and time management skills.
  • Strong communications skills both oral and written.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Mouse handling and procedures including intraperitoneal and intravenous injections tumor measurements and dissections.
  • Confocal Microscopy Immunologic studies including multiparameter flow cytometric processing and data analysis as well as in vitro functional assays including cell culture stimulation proliferation and cytokine production.
  • Molecular studies techniques including DNA and RNA extraction and quantification gel electrophoresis western blotting PCR and immunoprecipitation.

Statement of Work Details

Supports the planning and execution of research experiments in the context of the laboratorys overall research program.
  • Conduct laboratorybased translational research with a focus on drug development for the treatment of cancer.
  • Study cultured human and animal cell lines some of which may be derived from cancer tissue and analyze human and/or animal tissues with and without cancer.
  • Perform a wide range of sophisticated genetic biological and biochemical assays including but not limited to DNA transfection of cells monolayer and anchorageindependent growth assays immunoprecipitation assays agarose gel electrophoresis and in vivo and in vitro kinase assays.
  • Perform confocal immuneconfocal microscopy of cells.
  • Initiate design and develop new projects or assays that can enable the Center for Cancer Research/Laboratory of U. Rudolf Rare Tumor Initiative POB NCI to fulfill its responsibilities for advance in cancer research and development of cancer diagnostics cancer drugs and cancer vaccines.
Supports laboratory staff on research projects and techniques.
  • Work with staff on the interpretation of experiments performed by research scientists.
  • Serve as an authority on the tumor biology that is being studied and the assays that are being performed.
  • Collaborate with NIH/NCI expert staff to clarify needs and project objectives.
  • Work with the scientific staff to define key questions emerging from research projects in which experimental in vitro and in vivo analysis will contribute to elucidation of impact of novel experimental therapeutics on immune cells cancer cells and tumors grown in mice in general mechanisms of cell transformation identification of molecular targets and the development of biomarkers/biomarker signatures with potential to guide prevention diagnosis or treatment.
  • Perform studies that result in technical reports and information to advance cancer research.
  • Participate in special committees panels and colloquia that meet to determine policy or plan activity in the field.
Maintains laboratory equipment and the training of others in their use.
Assists in maintaining adequate space and facilities for ongoing and projected research studies.
Evaluates analyzes and interprets research data communicates results and methods in reports presentations and manuscripts.
  • Interpret results of initial analysis to reveal conclusions and shortcomings; identify pitfalls in the original choice of methods or experimental direction; redirect the study to achieve improved results.
  • Prepare data sets Tables and Figures for collaborative papers prepared for publication in peerreviewed journals; assemble and write papers for firstauthor publication in peerreviewed papers.
Coordinates with junior staff to modify research protocols.
  • Identify the need for further investigations and/or propose change in direction of work in light of accomplishments findings and current and future mission objectives.
Presents research at national scientific meetings and symposia.
  • Attend seminars within the National Institute of Health/Center for Cancer Research/Laboratory of U. Rudloff; pursue additional training where necessary; participate in discussions at meetings.
  • Make oral presentations at various conferences and seminars.
Provides interpretation of results guidance and scientific support to the management team.
  • Collaborate with scientists and statisticians in NCI NIH and extramural research institutions as appropriate to advance the research projects and elucidation of cancerrelated data.
Mentors junior level scientists.
