I am recruiting for a leading fitness brand in the UK with great brand presence globally. They are now recruiting for a Director of Legal General Counsel to join their team as they embark on their next journey of growth. This is a great opportunity to join a fitness brand with great expansion plans.

The Director of Legal plays a key role in providing legal advice mitigating legal risk leading compliance enforcement and provides advisory to the executive team and Board. Additionally this leader will drive all general commercial legal advice mediations contracts and supplier agreements.

Some of the key responsibilities

A key part of this role will include developing and maintaining relationships across the network leadership team and Board. You will expected to autonomously & independently provide legal advice on all matters affecting the business including the matters set out below with minimal assistance required from external counsel:

  • Commercial advice drafting and negotiation for a range of contracts
  • Appropriate management of legal and commercial risks including drafting and redrafting of relevant documentation
  • Intellectual property including trademarks copyright and IT matters including enforcement and protection
  • Management of regulatory investigations including liaising with Government agents devising strategies and executing plans
  • Litigation and inquiry management including undertaking dispute resolution processes instructing external counsel developing trial & hearing strategies and advising the business on risks & commercial positions
  • General legal advice including statutory compliance privacy property and insurance
  • Advice on relevant aspects of law and regulation with a particular emphasis on Franchising Law
  • General risk management contractual documentation statutory and regulatory compliance and day to day advice and support
  • Draft and review supplier agreements and support negotiation processes as required
  • Anticipate the business requirements and recommend ways of satisfying franchise and group expectations in legally compliant innovative ways
  • Independently negotiate contractual terms (commercial & mere legal) with third parties where required
  • Maintain awareness of statutory obligations throughout the network

Key Skills & Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of postqualification experience practising as a lawyer preferably with a corporate or franchise law focus
  • Proven capability of leading a legal & compliance team to meet and exceed quarterly and annual KPIs
  • Demonstrate strong commercial acumen and strategic orientation whilst maintaining a handson approach for day to day responsibilities
  • Strong technical legal ability supported with sound general commercial and corporate experience
  • Sound understanding of the franchising sector and its regulatory environment preferred
  • The ability to communicate complex legal situations simply and clearly to a wide audience including the Board
