Job Summary

We are seeking a Principal Engineer Mining to lead strategic studies supporting the future of the Kennecott underground mine. Using your knowledge and experience in mining engineering, operation and mining project development, you will solve complex technical problems within a multidisciplinary study and project execution team, ensure design consistency across the different areas of the mine, interface with different internal and external stakeholders, oversee the development of engineering design and execution, while maintaining a strong focus on quality management and ensure that the design meets the company functional requirements, corporate, state and federal standards. You will foster an equal opportunity, collaborative, safety and efficiency focused culture at the workplace, coach, and train staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Producing mine plans optimized for value and/or copper production across various orebodies and the entire value chain.
  • Developing project assumptions from first principles and benchmarking against similar projects and ongoing underground development.
  • Supporting mining engineering, reviewing progress reporting, evaluating progress, and troubleshooting. This includes engineering for procurement support and ownership of procurement packages and scopes of work forming the basis of contracts.
  • Collaborating with a broad group of stakeholders to ensure plans meet the requirements of various functional groups, including underground execution, infrastructure engineering, open-pit mining, processing, and tailings.
  • Working with infrastructure engineers to develop fixed facilities that support optimized mine plans.
  • Interpreting internal or external project delivery issues and recommending courses of action to eliminate potential execution problems, improve construction efficiency, and control construction costs.
  • Considering and recommending technologies to enhance lateral/vertical development productivity, production, and Life of Mine planning activities.
  • Preparing business cases, assessing trade-offs, making recommendations, and documenting findings to support project studies.
  • Contributing to successful project completion by participating hands-on in issue resolution, such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitable standard materials, and complex coordination requirements.
  • Transferring knowledge obtained during project execution to operation planning tasks.
  • Maintaining relationships with stakeholders to foster a culture of inclusion, collaboration, participation, and improvement, and addressing issues with impacts beyond the own team based on knowledge of related disciplines.
  • Actively participating and demonstrating leadership in promoting a strong safety culture during project and study execution.
  • Leading and contributing to assurance reviews with industry experts to ensure projects are well communicated with the goal of advancing projects through to execution.

Requirements:

  • This role required candidate to permanently relocate at Salt Lake City, UT.
  • Tertiary degree qualification in mining engineering or relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of underground mining experience with a strong technical background.
  • Commitment to prioritizing safety for yourself, your team, and the greater area operation.
  • Demonstrated visionary, adaptive, and people-centric leadership qualities based on Care, Courage, and Curiosity.
  • Technical and operational understanding of underground mine operating practices and their impact on value chain outcomes.
  • In-depth knowledge of engineering with a track record of generating practical and innovative solutions to complex technical challenges.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including effective communication and influencing with integrity.
  • Ability to leverage capabilities across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Broad understanding of project management, engineering management, multi-discipline engineering practices, and construction practices.
  • Advantageous to have experience with software such as Deswik CAD, Sched, SO, UGDB, and SOT (or similar).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools, mining-focused design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Vulcan, Deswik), understanding of development schedule and cost control tools and reporting, and a history of effective communication and collaboration with a multinational project execution team.
  • Exposure to and understanding of Lean in Construction principles.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster an inclusive, collaborative work environment.
