Project Description

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) at the State of Alabama is seeking a Communications Specialist to support the Communications Director. This multifaceted role requires a unique blend of technical documentation skills project coordination public relations marketing and administrative assistance. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating and maintaining IT documentation translating complex information into accessible formats and producing a range of technical publications such as manuals and product documentation for both IT and business communities. In addition to documentation the role involves developing and managing website content newsletters and annual reports executing comprehensive content strategies for digital platforms and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The candidate will work closely with leadership for strategic planning facilitate interdepartmental communication and ensure project completion. Public relations tasks include liaising with media developing marketing strategies and representing OIT in public forums. Administrative duties comprise supporting the Communications Director organizing meetings and managing documentation and records. This role demands a strategic thinker with excellent writing and editing skills strong organizational and project management abilities and a commitment to public service values.

Skills Required

  • Technical Writing: Ability to create clear concise IT documentation and technical publications.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Project Coordination: Strong organizational skills with the ability to support multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Proficient in facilitating collaboration and effective team communication.
  • Editing and Proofreading: Keen eye for detail in reviewing critiquing and editing documentation.
  • Digital Proficiency: Skilled in Microsoft Office Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop and execute content and marketing strategies.
  • Public Relations: Experience in managing media inquiries and public representation.

Skills Preferred

  • Advanced Digital Tools: Familiarity with advanced digital communication tools and platforms.
  • Creative Design: Skills in graphic design and layout for enhancing document presentation.
  • Social Media Marketing: Experience in developing and implementing social media strategies.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical abilities for market research and trend analysis in digital marketing.

Experience Required

  • Technical Writing: Minimum of 5 years of experience in technical writing specifically in creating IT documentation and technical publications.
  • Project Management: Proven track record of managing complex documentation projects coordinating with multiple teams and ensuring timely delivery.
  • Public Relations and Marketing: Experience in developing and managing website content newsletters annual reports and executing digital content strategies. Experience in liaising with media and handling public relations.
  • Administrative Assistance: Demonstrated experience in providing administrative support organizing meetings and managing documentation. CrossFunctional Collaboration: History of effective collaboration with development quality assurance and technical support teams in a technical or IT setting.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Experience in developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders including interviewing subject matter experts for information gathering.

Experience Preferred

  • Experience in governmental or public sector communications.
  • Leadership experience including coaching or mentoring junior staff. Involvement in largescale IT projects or initiatives within the public sector.

Education Required

  • Advanced degrees in Communications IT Business Administration or a related field.
  • Certifications in technical writing project management or related areas.
