Job Description:

Clinical Vascular Scientist:

Purpose of Role:

  • Undertake clinical work as a practitioner maintaining best standards of practice.
  • Maintain specialist clinical competence and be responsible in all areas of work.
  • Promote patient care and advocacy at all times.
  • To represent the professional nature of the vascular department by working in other areas of the Trust as required and appropriate.
  • Ensure that individually and collectively the department is up to date in best practice by maintaining professional development and equipment competency.
  • Work as part of the weekend TIA Doppler service with colleagues Actively develop the vascular Sonography services and participate in research and audit programmes with colleagues.
  • Manage staff and resources effectively to promote patient advocacy for inpatient outpatient and emergency cases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To maintain a high professional and technical standard of work at all times.
  • To be responsible for the safe conduct of any examination and welfare of the patient maintaining a high standard of patient care and acting as an advocate for patients.
  • To ensure that protocols in operation within the vascular department are adhered to.
  • To work as part of a professional team and individually when required.
  • To actively manage and coordinate the patient workload day to day.
  • Ensure all work areas are maintained as clean tidy and safe environments.
  • To participate in service improvement programs by conducting audits.
  • To actively participate in the continuous updating of imaging protocols with the help of clinical audits and evidencebased practice.
  • To appropriately utilise such protocols and ensure that any changes are communicated to the rest of the vascular team.
  • To help train medical staff and any colleagues on training programmes.
  • To work as part of the weekend TIA doppler service and ensure the rota for this is planned 6 weeks in advance.
  • To ensure that all equipment is maintained and to use it at all times in a safe and professional manner.
  • To ensure that equipment maintained by Biomedical Engineering (BME) is appropriately and routinely tested with corrective action instigated.
  • To undertake clinical work as an advanced practitioner vascular sonographer Trust wide as required working within own scope of practice and within departmental policies and protocols.
  • To work as part of a professional team and individually when required to maintain a high professional and technical standard of work at all times and be responsible for the safe conduct of any examination and welfare of the patient in the care of the post holder.
  • Ensure that individually and collectively the department is up to date in best practice by maintaining professional development and actively develop vascular sonography services and participate in research and audit programmes.
  • To interpret and report on the information obtained from the sonography examination in relation to a range of patient conditions to provide clinicians with clinical information and when appropriate suggest a diagnosis or further suitable diagnostic tests.

  • To record and report all suspected faults to the Vascular Lead and Biomedical Engineering (BME) appropriate action taken.
  • To actively assist in any Quality Assurance Clinical Governance Risk Management and Audit programmes as required.
  • To maintain effective liaison with all staff groups within Diagnostic Imaging and all service users.
  • To observe all safety regulations with particular regard to vascular sonography safety.
  • To assist in monitoring of image quality on a daily basis.
