Endowed Professor Biomaterials & Regenerative Dental Medicine

University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) one of the top dental schools in the country welcomes applications and nominations for the position of inaugural Dr. Karen J. Ivers Endowed Professorship in Biomaterial and Regenerative Dental Medicine. As the first dental college in the United States UMSOD honors its rich history while embracing innovation and the future of oral health care.

UMSOD is seeking a tenure-track associate or full professor in the field of dental biomaterials and regenerative medicine to advance the schools research status foster interdisciplinary collaboration and develop new external partnerships. This distinguished position requires an eminent research scientist who will work with colleagues in the department School and across the university to obtain funding teach and train students advance science and provide innovative solutions and translational discoveries to enhance patient care throughout the State of Maryland.

Advancing scientific discovery is a vital part of the mission of UMSOD. The School supports transdisciplinary research programs in dental oral and craniofacial health spanning both basic and clinical sciences. UMSOD has consistently ranked among the top 10 U.S. dental schools in NIH funding since 2010 reaching as high as No. 4 in 2020 (Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research).

Research at UMSOD is strengthened through close collaboration with colleagues across the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) campus including the Schools of Medicine Nursing and Pharmacy as well as with the University of Maryland College Park in engineering and computer science. UMSOD investigators also partner with leading federal research institutions such as the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and maintain active collaborations with international research partners. These interdisciplinary partnerships foster innovative solutions and contribute to meaningful advances in oral health research.

The ideal candidate will hold an earned doctoral degree and demonstrate a record of distinguished scholarship and funded research. A successful history of advancing research at a research-intensive university or comparable research institute complexity is expected. The candidate should also bring experience fostering research partnerships and collaborations along with a strong background in research development and an appreciation for all forms of scholarly activity. A keen understanding for a variety of funding mechanisms research advocacy and regulatory compliance is essential.

The School

UMSOD offers exceptional educational programs and patient care in oral health. As one of seven professional schools at the UMBs 65-acre campus it is part of a thriving academic health center that combines groundbreaking biomedical research and exceptional patient care. Close to 7000 students and approximately 8200 faculty and staff members make the university a powerful economic engine for the state and region. The Dr. Karen J. Ivers Endowed Professorship in Biomaterial and Regenerative Dental Medicine will be based full-time at UMSOD.

The schools state of-the-art facilities contain more than 50000 square feet of dedicated research space providing a dynamic environment for collaboration among UMSOD faculty members and their colleagues from UMB including the Schools of Medicine Nursing and others. Adjacent to the Campus is the 14-acre University of Maryland BioPark which fuels the commercialization of new drugs diagnostics and medical devices enabling collaboration with more than 1000 employees including scientists and entrepreneurs.

The Department of Biomaterials and Regenerative Dental Medicine advances oral health and improves lives through research education and services. Its research focuses on regenerative dental medicine using stem cells scaffolds nanotechnology and bioactive agents as well as developing bioactive therapeutic dental restorative and preventative materials for tooth restorations. The department is also dedicated to educating and training the next generation of researchers clinicians and educators. The department is home to three full-time faculty members who hold national and international recognition for their contributions to the field.

Key Responsibilities

Assist in shaping an overarching strategy for scholarship and discovery that elevates the school and university with a focus on interdisciplinary and translational research.

Partner with the dean school leadership faculty and students and the university to advance Biomaterials & Regenerative Medicine research.

Serve as a driving force behind interdisciplinary collaborations and translational research across the school and university with a clear application in dental medicine.

Grow the overall research volume through grants by increasing the number of the overall number of proposals submitted.

Increase the variety of funding mechanisms including large multidisciplinary grants center grants training grants and other funding sources aimed at advancing scholarship and discovery within the school and university.

Help shape strategies to build research and innovation within the school and university through interdisciplinary collaborations aimed at advancing dental medicine.

Foster an equitable diverse and inclusive environment that focuses on continuous improvement best practices and ongoing professional development.

Promote excellence in research by working with school leadership to develop a sustainable research infrastructure that meets the ongoing and evolving needs of a growing research enterprise.

Ensure that students engage in a variety of hands-on experiential learning opportunities focused on cross-disciplinary research and individual student interests.

Compensation & Benefits

UMB is offering a competitive salary along with an attractive start-up package which will be commensurate with experience and addition to a competitive salary UMB has a comprehensive benefits package and generous paid time off.

Required Qualifications

A terminal degree along with a proven track record of distinguished scholarship and funded research preferably from the NIH to qualify for tenure at the associate professor of full professor rank.

An eminent record of advancing research and scholarly activities at a research-intensive university institute or center.
