• Completion of a recognized 2 year Diploma in Police Studies Security Criminology or a related field
• Minimum of one year of strong customer service experience including some experience in law enforcement or bylaw enforcement

Assets:

• Experience or specific training in the identification of plants and weeds

Skills required for Success:

• Considerable knowledge of investigative techniques enforcement powers rules of evidence and court processes
• Knowledge of plants and weed species
• Proficiency with Google Workspace and specialized databases such as CAD SLIM or Pictometry
• Excellent conflict resolution skills and the ability to use good judgment in difficult situations
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for report writing letter composition and presentations to community groups
• Ability to objectively investigate collect evidence and analyze information to make sound decisions
• Effective workload management to prioritize high volumes of work while maintaining quality and safety standards
• Ability to pass internal training program which includes Officer Safety tactics
• A commitment to understanding how bias racism and discrimination can influence behavior and enforcement decisions

Conditions of Employment:

• Valid current Intermediate First Aid CPR and AED certificate
• Requirement to wear necessary protective equipment including safety footwear head protection and gloves as required
• Hire is dependent upon a Criminal Record Check that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position there may be a cost associated with this requirement
• Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent)
• Use of personal vehicle is required. Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business

Work Environment:

• Able to work under various weather conditions and in a safe manner
• The role involves exposure to confrontational situations and interactions with aggressive members of the public
• Physical requirements include occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs and navigating various terrains
• You will be required to work various shifts - weekends and holidays included
• The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

This dynamic role involves inspecting and enforcing municipal bylaws and provincial legislation. Act as a public ambassador and change agent solving problems independently and coordinating with multi-disciplinary teams to address community concerns with a respectful inclusive and service-minded approach.

What will you do

• Conduct proactive and community-initiated investigations to enforce the Weed Control Act. Perform inspections on private and public property to ensure compliance regarding safety mobility and regulated weed enforcement
• Maintain highly detailed and accurate records of all investigations including officer notes and evidentiary photographs
• Use autonomous judgment and officer discretion to vary enforcement approaches based on the specific needs of a situation
• Organize and prioritize daily case files to ensure timely follow-ups and forward momentum on all investigations
• Provide education to community partners regarding bylaws legislation and enforcement policies
• Attend court proceedings to provide professional evidence in support of investigations
