POSITION FUNCTION

Design produce and install signs decals fleet markings wraps and other graphics for the City of Victoria and outside agencies.

KEY DUTIES

Design and manufacture a variety signs or graphics by preparing sketches electronic proofs or scale drawings; make recommendations to requesting department on size colour wording and material; estimate time and cost for projects; recommend develop and apply new processing techniques.

Lay out and produce lettering and graphic images for signs vehicle markings anti-graffiti wraps stencils and decals using computerized sign making equipment; transfer to different substrates such as vinyl banner glass metals plastics or vinyl sheeting to produce finished signs. Follow the Uniform Traffic Control Manual guidelines in the layout and production of regulatory warning guide and temporary construction signs. Apply fleet markings or wraps on City vehicles or property install signs inside/outside of City buildings and apply vinyl glass frosting on City buildings.

Maintain equipment (large format digital printers and vinyl cutters) and arrange for repairs as needed; creates calls for service for requests from all City departments for sign and graphic fabrication complete calls for service and maintain production records work orders and inventory and requisition supplies from City stores and outside agencies; coordinate the replacement of signage as required by asset management program.

Coordinate and review the work of approximately 2 staff involved in sign production; provide advice on working plans sketches drafts asset management training and instruction as required.

Perform related duties where qualified.

INDEPENDENCE

Work is generated by inventory requirements requests for service or assigned by supervisor.

Work is reviewed while in progress.

Recommendations for equipment purchases are referred to supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:

Work in awkward position at a drafting table while weeding vinyl lettering and assembling sign materials. (often)

Short periods of intense concentration while performing detailed design work. (frequent)

Visual/Auditory Effort:

Focus on computer for short periods while creating designs and layout. (frequent)

Work Environment:

Sign shop / or other City locations.

Work outside in all weather conditions. (rare)

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Organize and prioritize the work of a unit.

Understand and apply the techniques of graphic design and sign fabrication.

Working level operation of current City related speciality software such as Adobe Illustrator Gerber Omega and Tempest.

Produce signs and layouts using manual and computer aided sign making equipment including vinyl cutters and large format digital printer.

Use of hand tools.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies.

Work and operate equipment safely.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education Training and Occupational Certification:

High school graduation.

Graphic design certificate. (1 year)

IMSA Level 2 Certificate. (32 hours)

Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Drivers Licence.

Experience:

2 years of experience in sign making including computerized design work.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER:
