RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in veterinary epidemiology and related fields;
  • Experiential training of undergraduate and postgraduate students in veterinary epidemiology and related fields;
  • Preparation presentation and review of course materials;
  • Lectures seminars and tutorials evaluation of students student support and participation in curriculum improvement and development;
  • Active participation in departmental research programmes and development of new research programmes;
  • Service rendering to developing communities and continuing education programmes; and
  • Administrative and management tasks as delegated by the Head of Department.

Minimum requirements:

Lecturer:
  • A BVSc or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • Registration (or registrable without having to sit the council exam) with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinarian;
  • Registered for MSc or an MMedVet or committed to acquiring an M-degree within three years of appointment;
  • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio;
  • Strong interest in research and potential to become an established researcher; and
  • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development.

Added advantages and preferences:
  • A Masters degree in a relevant field.

Senior Lecturer:
  • A BVSc or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • Registration (or registrable without having to sit the council exam) with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinarian;
  • A Masters degree in epidemiology or a related field; or SAVC ACVPM ECVPH or equivalent registration as a diplomate or specialist in veterinary epidemiology;
  • Five or more relevant peer-reviewed publications in accredited scientific journals; and
  • Registered for a PhD or committed to acquiring a PhD within three years of appointment.

Added advantages and preferences:
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate level;
  • A PhD in a relevant field.

Associate Professor:

  • A BVSc or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • Registration (or registrable without having to sit the council exam) with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinarian;
  • An appropriate PhD degree;
  • Significant national professional recognition;
  • Demonstrable experience in research supported by ten or more relevant research-based full papers in national and international accredited journals;
  • A record of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience;
  • Successful supervision of Masters students;
  • Evidence of involvement in the supervision of PhD students;
  • Proof of the ability to attract independent research funding;
  • Participatory membership in professional bodies;
  • Evidence of academic scholarship;
  • Evidence of community engagement; and
  • Experience in field-based research.

Professor:

In addition to the requirements for Associate Professor:
  • Significant international peer recognition based on technical expertise collaboration and scientific output;
  • Substantial experience in research supported by a sustained record and impact of publications in nationally and internationally accredited journals with a focus on one or more specialized fields of veterinary epidemiology;
  • Successful supervision of several students at Masters PhD and post-doctoral levels; and
  • Evidence of exceptional academic scholarship.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Proven knowledge and competence in the field of veterinary epidemiology with experience in the analysis and interpretation of animal health-related data;
  • Good quantitative skills with experience in the use of one or more statistical software programmes used in veterinary epidemiology;
  • Research interest appropriate to the position;
  • Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain a further postgraduate qualification in reasonable time;
  • Good language communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
  • Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation word-processing spreadsheets and social networking skills; and
  • Critical thinking ability.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Expertise in one or more specialised fields of epidemiology such as spatial analysis disease modelling risk assessment or animal health economics evidenced by publications in scientific journals;
  • National Research Foundation (NRF) rating as a research scientist or eligibility to apply for a rating; and
  • Strong leadership networking and grantsmanship skills.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbents level of appointment as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
