Definition of Classification:

The Public Safety Dispatcher receives assimilates and dispenses calls received for service from various locations on campus to on-duty Public Safety Officers. Serving as the first point of contact provides excellent customer service responding professionally courteously and empathetically to persons in various states of mind. This position reports to the Public Safety Sergeant.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Answers departmental telephones assisting public and dispatching gathered information from calls (via microphone) to Public Safety Officers and communicating by telephone to the Redlands Police Department and Redlands Fire Department when needed.
  • Enters activity logs parking permits and citations into computer along with entering and posting of campus events schedule.
  • Locates and relays information requested by officers; contacts emergency personnel when needed.
  • Completes work orders as requested; receives and assimilates calls for repairs along with contacting the alarm company regarding alarm activation.
  • Issues keys and parking permits after regular business hours.
  • Adheres to all safety and/or housekeeping policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to Team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

      Qualification Guidelines

        Any combination equivalent to but not limited to the following:

        Experience/Training/Education:

        Required

          • High school diploma or equivalent supplemented with one year of course work in public relations or dispatching.
          • One-year related experience in a similar position. Completion of a POST Public Safety Dispatcher Course is desirable.
          • A comprehensive background check is required.

            Knowledgeand Skills:

            • Working knowledge of legal codes requirements procedures and techniques for receiving complaints and calls for service.
            • Basic knowledge of applicable automated dispatch and Public Safety systems and databases.
            • Basic Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
            • Interpret apply explain and ensure compliance with applicable Federal State and local policies procedures laws and regulations.
            • Ability to independently respond and act quickly accurately evaluate information and situations and make appropriate decisions in routine non-routine and emergency situations.
            • Working knowledge of geographical layout and ability to read maps and floor plans to provide directions to officers in the field.
            • Considerable independent judgment initiative calm and understanding in stressful situations exercised in interpreting orders rules and regulations in emergency situations with the public.
            • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with diverse populations.
            • Prepare clear and accurate reports records and other written materials.
            • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships interact with all members of the campus community and public and maintain composure in highly stressful situations or when dealing with difficult individuals.
            • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
            • Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students faculty and staff.

            Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

            Working Conditions:

            Standard dispatch center office setting. Duties performed in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. The position may require after-hours and emergency response.

            Physical Demands:

            Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk short distances on a regular basis; may travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer calls and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift carry and/or move objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

            HIRING RANGE:Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification commensurate with candidates education experience skills and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range considers the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience skills knowledge abilities education licensure and certifications and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is defined as theHiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity and relevant qualifications.

            BACKGROUND CHECK:Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. The University will make a conditional offer of employment which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current employee who was conditionally offered the position.

            DRIVERS LICENSE CHECK:Possession of a valid Drivers License is required for certain positions. Employees in positions that require a valid Drivers License will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid drivers license and reflects driving record.

            PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS:For certain positions typically in Public Safety Facilities Athletics and Information Technology Services departments employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 Safety Officers in addition to a pre-employment physical exam will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
