Job Summary

The Arthur B. McDonald Canadian Astroparticle Physics Research Institute (MI) was founded on the Nobel Prize winning research of Dr. Arthur McDonald conducted at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. It has grown into a diverse multi-institutional world leading hub for research in Astroparticle physics with a vibrant research and outreach community at Queens University.
Reporting to the Associate Director Operations and working closely with the Education and Outreach Officer the Education & Curriculum Lead acting as a teacher-in-residence at the McDonald Institute will be responsible for bringing a teachers classroom-informed pedagogical perspective and approach to MIs education and outreach portfolio. The incumbent will work collaboratively with the McDonald Institutes external relations team to design classroom educational resources aligned with the Ontario Physics and Science curriculum. The incumbent works with the Education and Outreach Officer and MI faculty members across the MI community to understand state-of-the-art experiments in the field and to identify connections to the Ontario Physics curriculum.
Occasional travel within Ontario visiting schools to deliver developed educational content is required.

Job Description

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Lead the development and implementation of Ontario Physics and Science curriculum-aligned educational resources for classrooms teacher workshops web-based student activities (e.g. interactive computer demonstrations) student programming and assessment materials.
Provide advanced pedagogical expertise and leadership in the creation of high-quality innovative and engaging resources for students which communicate physics concepts in exciting and creative ways and ensure that the developed content will be utilized across diverse school contexts.
Create exceptional quality educational resources and outreach programs by working independently and as part of a team.
Collaborate with faculty and researchers to translate advances in physics into meaningful age-appropriate accessible learning experiences for students
Design evaluate and refine educational resources in classroom settings and incorporate feedback to improve content and delivery
Deliver inperson outreach activities workshops or presentations at schools across Ontario to enhance effectiveness accessibility and reach
Collaborate in documenting and reporting on education and outreach activities outcomes and impact
Design and administer feedback mechanisms including educator and student surveys to evaluate educational resources and programming that guide continuous improvement and inform reports for MI
Acting as the McDonald Institutes representative to the local teacher network and students supporting strategic engagement with the educational community
Undertake other duties as assigned in support of the Institute

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
Bachelor of Education with teaching qualifications to teach at secondary and senior grades
A postgraduate degree in Education Science or a related discipline is considered an asset
Several years (minimum 5) of teaching experience at the secondary/high school level
Experience or training in Scientific Outreach digital and visual learning strategies and technologies.
Applicant must be in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
Experience using web-editing software. Ability to learn operation and basic maintenance of a broad range of devices and software tools relevant to the role.
Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
French language skills would be considered an asset.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Exceptional communication skills. Ability to work with researchers to translate complex topics in science using concise accurate and accessible English-language materials.
Ability to communicate effectively creatively and with sensitivity to diverse audience contexts. Demonstrated visualization skills are considered an asset.
Excellent teamwork and collaboration building skills sharing information contributing ideas seeking input and ensuring end-product accuracy and precision.
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work respectfully with all partners and clients; work with integrity and take the utmost care in maintaining confidentiality where required.
Exceptional organization skills to manage and prioritize projects meet deadlines and organize workflow.
Knowledge of university structure academic regulations computing/administrative systems.
