The Public Health Inspector implements the programs of the Health Protection division protecting individual and community health through health promotion and enforcement of Provincial Acts Legislation and By-Laws. They carry out public health inspection activities required by the Ontario Public Health Standards under the Ontario Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA). This includes identifying public health hazards overseeing corrective action and enforcing the HPPA and its regulations. Inspectors also provide consultative and educational services on various topics that affect public health. Public Health Inspectors working with the CID team will contribute to the planning development coordination implementation and evaluation by the team as it relates to Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control and all associated Protocols prescribed by the Ontario Public Health Standards.

Areas of Responsibility:
Inspect and monitor food premises; plan reviews of proposed food premises; assist with food recalls where requested; food sampling and analysis; food complaint investigations.
Inspect public pools and spas; monitor and post public notice at bathing beaches.
Enforce Small Drinking Water Regulation; assess and advise operators on follow-up/corrective action for adverse water quality incidents; issue boil water and drinking water advisories.
Investigate tenant complaints for recluse mold pests and environmental health concerns such as groundwater contamination air quality; liaise with Ministry of Environment and Climate Change; respond to garbage and standing water complaints.
Administer the duties of the rabies control programs including the investigation of potential human exposure to rabies from animal contact testing and enforcement of mandatory immunization regulation; dispense vaccine to physicians as needed.
Carry out communicable disease investigations where suspected food borne illness occurs; conduct communicable disease surveillance management education and control.
Case and contact management of reports of suspected and confirmed infectious diseases.
Contact management including counseling prophylaxis or treatment recommendations and immunization recommendations.
Health promotion in collaboration with community partners regarding public knowledge of infectious diseases and infection prevention and control practices.
Investigation and surveillance of suspected and confirmed outbreaks of disease in the community and within institutions/facilities.
Reporting of infectious disease data elements in accordance with the HPPA (Regulation 569) into the integrated public health information system (iPHIS).
Participate in municipal emergency response planning and exercises

Hours of Work:

Regular office hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
Evening and weekend work may be required
Support on-call after hours weekends and stat holidays (approximately 4-5 times per year)

Requirements:

Degree in Environmental Health
Mandatory Certification in Public Health Inspection (Canada)
Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
Ability to clearly document information prepare reports
Excellent computer skills thorough knowledge of data base programs
Familiarity with the Hedgehog
Ability to work in a flexible and cooperative manner with clients the public and colleagues
Thorough knowledge of all legislation and standards relating to Environmental and Public Health
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing demands in a professional manner
Valid drivers license and use of vehicle
Maintain annual influenza immunization and adult immunization.
