for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Fairbanks Alaska!
What you will be doing:
We will be hiring two Fish and Wildlife Technician 3s with start date of August 24 2026 and end date of November 13 2026. This 3-month permanent seasonal position is responsible for conducting subsistence salmon harvest surveys using electronic devices (iOS) in the Yukon Area from Late August to mid-November each year. You will visit roughly half of 33 communities from the mouth of the Yukon River and coast (Emmonak Hooper Bay) to the upper Yukon River area (Venetie Chalkyitsik to Fort Yukon). This is a fast-paced tour of 1200 miles of the Yukon River watershed contacting approximately 700 households. We are looking for applicants who are friendly open and detail oriented who can handle a high degree of independent decision making and deal with frequent schedule changes working on weekends weather delays and diverse lodging and work environments. If travel to communities is not possible surveys will be conducted via phone and mail from Fairbanks (room and board not provided).

This position will provide you with the experience for advancement into future jobs in the Fishery Biologist series. Your work will contribute to the management of salmon species in the Yukon River drainage including species of international importance per the treaty with Canada.
The working environment you can expect:
This position is stationed in Fairbanks however up to 95% of your time may be in Yukon Area communities. Your daily schedule may include: 1) traveling between communities by small airplane boat or vehicle; 2) surveying households in-person or by phone while maintaining confidentiality; 3) interacting with tribal/city personnel or the public; and 4) communicating with survey staff. Requires frequent travel including weekends within the State (normally one trip of up to 3 weeks in length and 3 trips up to 10 days in length each season).
Work will take place during evening hours weekends and outdoors (potentially in inclement weather).
Who we are looking for:
We are looking for two candidates that possess some or all the following position-specific competencies. If you have any experience with the following please document these in your application. This information will be used to help determine which applicants will advance to the interview phase of the recruitment and selection process:- Experience conducting harvest (fish game etc.) related surveys and/or collecting other types of information from the public in person and/or over the telephone;
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills and the ability to keep accurate daily records (field notes travel expense reports) over an extended period;
- Experience working in the Yukon Area or on other large river systems involving a salmon or non-salmon fishery;
- Experience working independently on a project in a remote field location for an extended period and;
- Experience using iOS devices (cellular phones and tablets) for data entry and communication and personal computers and Microsoft Office (Including Word Excel and Teams) for word processing data entry and communication.

A valid drivers license is required.This position may be in possession of or have access to firearms/ammunition.
First Aid/CPR. For those not already certified training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher guide or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection.
Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
Fields of study comparable to fisheries wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture biology ichthyology microbiology ornithology and zoology.Additional Required Information
