Job Summary

Description

In an environment of continuous quality improvement the Patient Financial Advocate is responsible for serving to help all patients-especially those who are uninsured underinsured and have low incomes-assess and assist in resolving financial situations. This includes establishing payment plans and other financial arrangements determining patients eligibility for hospital-sponsored charity care and external financial assistance and collecting patients remaining estimated balances at point of service. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.

Job Functions:

  1. Assists uninsured and underinsured patients with obtaining health care coverage
  2. Conducts detailed discussions with patients obtains information and collaborates with on-site Medicaid eligibility vendor to determine patients eligibility for Medicaid programs.
  3. Submits Ohio Department of Medicaid Presumptive Eligibility applications and collaborates with Medicaid on-site eligibility vendor to ensure patients complete full Medicaid application.
  4. Performs benefit education price estimates and financial counseling on potential out-of-pocket expenses for patients who have services scheduled.
  5. Assists patients in filling out financial assistance applications obtains required information and adjusts accounts correctly using established guidelines for charity care programs.
  6. Assists with inquiries from telephone calls and walk-in patients regarding billing problems.
  7. Contacts patients with outstanding balances to review account information examine patients eligibility for financial assistance and sets-up payment plans.
  8. Finds resources through drug manufacturers drug assistance programs and foundations to assist patients in paying for their medications.
  9. Assists employees by setting up payment plans through payroll deduction.
  10. Collects and posts cash credit card payments and appropriate discounts to patient accounts and balances cash drawers daily.
  11. Ensures donated funds are applied promptly and appropriately to patient accounts.
  12. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.


Qualifications

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Associates degree in business related field or a minimum of one year of equivalent experience in business or job related field required.

Special Knowledge Skills Training:

  • Experience in discussing and resolving financial situations with patients
  • Computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent organizational time management and customer service skills

Compensation Details: Education experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
