Job Summary
The National Synchrotron Light Source is a state-of-the-art medium-energy (3-billion-electron-volt or GeV) electron storage ring that produces x-rays up to 10000 times brighter than the NSLS. The mission of the National Synchrotron Light Source is to provide extremely bright x-rays for basic and applied research in biology and medicine materials and chemical sciences geosciences and environmental sciences and nanoscience. To support this program the NSLS-II must design fabricate assemble test install and operate unique research equipment to generate transport transfer accelerate and focus electron and X-ray includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the NSLS-II scientific engineering and technical staff. The NSLS-II supports an international user community of over 2200 researchers from 400 universities. The NSLS-II performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
Position Description
The NSLS-II RF Group designs fabricates operates and maintains multiple high power Radio Frequency (RF) systems including 500 MHz and 3 GHz klystrons inductive output tube (IOT) 300 kW solid-state amplifiers and switching power supplies. The group also assembles and operates superconducting RF cavities low-level analog and RF electronics and a liquid-helium cryogenic plant. NSLS-II performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner under a rigorous conduct of operations approach. This position is for an experienced Electronic/RF technician. The selected candidate must demonstrate expertise in the fabrication troubleshooting and operations of high-speed analog and digital electronics and RF systems. Must be able to troubleshoot complex systems perform diagnosis and repair. Working with a diverse group of scientists engineers and technicians the successful candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining Radio Frequency transmitters similar to high power commercial broadcast systems. They will be expected to mentor and guide junior technical staff members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Under general technical direction:
Populate printed circuit boards assemble and troubleshoot low-level radio frequency high speed analog/digital electronic sub-systems from assembly drawings and circuit diagrams
Build modify and characterize prototype systems
Diagnose and repair of electronic/RF systems and sub-systems
Operate electronic measurement equipment power supplies hand and power tools
Keep maintenance log and stock/maintain inventory of spare parts
Monitor system parameters
Perform equipment maintenance and housekeeping
Maintain and implement safety practices and procedures applicable to daily activities
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
a BS degree in a technical field and 2 years work experience or;
a technical institute Adult BOCES certification AA degree in a technical field CCI program completion at BNL plus 6 years experience or;
a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 7 years relevant work experience or;
8 years relevant work experience.
Solid understanding of high-speed analog and digital electronics theory and systems
Thorough familiarity with RF test equipment (power meters network and spectrum analyzers etc.)
Ability to read and interpret complex schematic drawings
Excellent judgment and troubleshooting skills to the subsystem and component level
Strong electronics assembly skills and knowledge of board assembly practices
Strong computer skills with applications such as Microsoft Word Excel and Outlook
Strong organization and documentation skills
Self-motivated with good workmanship
Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills
Respond to Emergency Call-ins outside of normal working hours
Strong safety ethics and knowledge of safe work practices in high power systems
Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

a technical institute Adult BOCES certification AA degree in a technical field CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years experience or;
a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or;
10 years relevant work experience.
Experience with one or more of the following:
Experience with radio frequency systems
Solid understanding of RF theory
Experience with Klystrons IOTs or Solid-State amplifiers
Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Experience with high voltage power supplies
Electro-mechanical systems
High pressure pneumatic or cryogenic system
Printed Circuit Board Layout
Environmental Health & Safety Requirements:
Must be able to lift up to 50pounds
Continuous walking / standing
Must be able to climb a ladder and work at heights up to 30 feet
Ability to speak hear and understand speech
Hand / eye coordination
Good vision and hand dexterity
Will be required to occasionally work off-hours nights and/or weekends to support mission critical projects

This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $79100.00 - $119700.00 / year. You will be placed at the level and salarycommensuratewith your experience.
