Job Summary

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason thisclassification exists is to perform manual and semi-skilled labor in the installationand maintenance of traffic control signs and/or pavement markings. Positionincumbents spend a majority of their time performing labor-intensive duties;once proficient at these duties incumbents are trained on the skilled aspectsof the job including performing traffic control sign and striping layout therules and guidelines governing traffic control signs and striping and theoperation of striping and sign construction equipment. Position incumbents are primarily assigned toeither the Street Striping subdivision or the Signing subdivision and performthe duties associated with that subdivision; however all position incumbentsare cross-trained on the duties of both subdivisions and can be utilized asneeded. Primary workresponsibilities may include: preparing road surfaces for painting; setting upand tearing down barricades and safety cones; assisting in the installation andrevitalization of traffic control pavement markings; assisting in theinstallation removal replacement and maintenance of street and trafficcontrol signs; operating as training allows center line and hand stripingmachines thermoplastic machines and melting kettles cold laid plasticmachines bituminous machines and core hole drills; assisting in the constructionof street and traffic control signs; and performingadditional duties in service to the work on crews ranging from two to six workers and receiveonsite direction from Traffic Maintenance Worker IIs and IIIs. Position incumbents are supervised by aTraffic Maintenance Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Highschool diploma or GED and six months of experience installing stripinginstalling raised pavement markers installing traffic signs and/ormanufacturing street traffic regulator construction and portable signs.

Special Requirements

Musthave and maintain a valid drivers license and insurable driving record.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physicalability to walk on asphalt surfaces for distances of up to 5 miles in one dayin order to assist with paint striping and sign operations. Physical abilityto stoop crouch bend and kneel in order to assist with equipment operationand maintenance loading or unloading equipment and preparing surfaces forstriping and signing operations. Physical ability to lift carrypull and push equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds withoutassistance. Physical ability to lift carrypull and push equipment or materials weighing up to 150 pounds with assistance. Physical ability to frequently climbinto and out of the bed of truck in order to secure tools or materials installor remove sign posts and clean road signs. Physical ability to lift and strikea sign post with a 16 pound sledge hammer using hand-eye coordination andphysical strength.

WORK CONDITIONS: Workperformed involves a moderate to extensive amount of manual labor. Work is performed in a variety ofweather conditions with exposure to the elements to include direct sunexposure extreme heat and/or cold rain and lightning. Work includes exposure to strong fumes fromsolvents paints and other chemicals. Work involves frequent use of metalglass bituminous and other materials which may cause frequent cutsabrasions and bruises. Work isperformed in a variety of uncontrolled work environments including but notlimited to: in close proximity to heavy traffic traveling at various rates ofspeed; in unkempt areas with tall weeds and potentially poisonous plants; andexposure to ants bees insects and other local wildlife. Work requires someextended work hours overtime night weekend and holiday hours as well asafterhours on-call duty.

Kind of Examination
