Job Summary

Position Information


Help protect taxpayers money by investigating claims determining liability and supporting fair well-documented resolutions.


This position investigates evaluates and manages property damage personal injury and liability claims involving the City working closely with legal staff claimants and other agencies to support timely and fair claim resolutions.

What Youll Do

  • Investigate claims by gathering evidence conducting site visits and interviewing involved parties.
  • Evaluate liability damages coverage and applicable laws to adjust claims and make sound recommendations.
  • Prepare clear reports and assist in negotiating fair settlements.
  • Coordinate with relevant City departments claimants and others to ensure compliance and resolution of claims.


There is one (1) vacancy with the Department of the Corporation CounselLitigation Division in Honolulu.

Special Working Conditions

  • Work schedule may be adjusted to include evenings weekends and holidays.
  • Must be physically able to efficiently and effectively perform investigative work that requires moderate to arduous physical exertion including but not limited to the ability to:
    • Ascend and descend ladders scaffolds and stairs
    • Move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces to access and investigation site
    • Traverse regular and steep terrain
    • Bend crawl on hands and knees and/or reach and lift to perform inspections
    • Lift and carry or otherwise move 25 pounds
  • Use of personal vehicle is required to drive to various locations for investigations site visits etc.

**Salary for the position at the Department of the Corporation Counselis commensurate with applicable experience: $4961 to $5811 per month (SR-20)pending approval.**



There is one (1) additional vacancy with the Board of Water Supply in the Office of the Manager & Chief Engineer.

Special Working Conditions

  • Required to respond to incidents during off-work time (evenings weekends and holidays) when risk management representation is required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four year college or university with a bachelors degree.

Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for a bachelors degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge skills and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelors degree.

For example:
1. Four (4) years of professional work experience in any occupation may substitute for a general bachelors degree.
2. Four (4) years of general work experience (does not need to be professional level experience) in claims adjustment may substitute for a general bachelors degree.

The education requirement must be met at the time of application. Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United order to receive credit for the education proper documentation e.g. a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Two (2) years of progressively responsible professional work experience which involved investigating analyzing adjusting and settling claims of liability property damage and/or automobile cases for insurance companies and/or self-insured programs of government and/or major private organizations.

Applicable Skills:
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of insurance claims adjusting.
  • Knowledge of risk management principles concepts and practices.
  • Knowledge of claims investigations and settlement techniques.
  • Knowledge of interviewing and investigating methods and techniques.
  • Ability to investigate evaluate adjust and settle liability property personal injury and automobileclaims.
  • Ability to read and evaluate medical reports relating to claims for injury.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of claim data to identify issues and make recommendations for the adjustment of claims.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid drivers license (Type 3/automobile) prior to appointment.
