Position Summary:
The primary responsibility of an Ophthalmic Technician is to provide clinical support to on-site practitioners within the medical practice. The Ophthalmic Technician assists on-site practitioners in delivering quality patient care including performing preliminary eye examinations preparing patients for procedures and ensuring accurate documentation of clinical information.
Education and Training
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)- (preferred)
Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year working as an Ophthalmic Technician in a Medical Practice.
Skills
Working knowledge of:
  • Ophthalmic procedures diagnostic equipment and clinical protocols
  • Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
Understanding of:
  • Ocular anatomy and physiology including common eye conditions
  • Basic ophthalmology terminology and clinical procedures
  • Vision testing techniques
  • Infection control and safety protocols in a clinical setting
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interact with all patients in a respectful courteous and professional manner consistent with practice standards.
  • Obtain and document comprehensive patient histories including chief complaint history of present illness past medical and ocular history family history allergies and current medications.
  • Perform clinical testing and measurements with accuracy ensuring consistent and detailed documentation in patient records.
  • Assist with minor procedures including administration of topical ophthalmic medications and preparation of patients for dilation.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain clinical equipment including replacing bulbs checking connections and reporting unresolved issues to the Lead Ophthalmic Technician; ensure exam lanes are clean organized and adequately stocked.
  • Assist on-site practitioner in all clinical areas including preparing for and cleaning after minor procedures and performing diagnostic tests as directed.
  • Provide scribing support for on-site practitioner as needed particularly during high patient volume or between patient visits.
  • Maintain efficient patient flow adjusting testing sequences as necessary to support clinic operations.
  • Escort patients to check-out or optical dispensary areas as needed to ensure a smooth transition of care.
  • Seek guidance from senior staff when necessary and perform duties within the scope of training and competency.
  • Print and provide eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions as directed.
