Job Summary

Position Summary

In collaboration with the Program Coordinator this temporary part-time position serves as the primary operational and logistical leader for the FPU Wilderness Summer Sierra Programs. The role involves planning and implementing all non-academic aspects of the program including budgeting planning and purchasing as well as leading student recruitment and promotional efforts on the FPU campus to drive enrollment. Responsibilities also include managing gear maintenance inventory and purchasing coordinating trail permits and route planning overseeing food planning and purchases and playing a key role in hiring training and managing mountain guide staff. Depending on the program the position may also require serving as the Lead Mountain Guide for the wilderness portion of the program. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and impactful outdoor adventure experience.

Essential Functions

  • Coordination of the Base Camp experience including but not limited to facility rental transport lodging staff faculty and student logistics day trips and provide support for Base Camp food execution in collaboration with Food Staff
  • Oversight of plans for the wilderness trips and related tasks including execution of wilderness reconnaissance route planning and risk management plan wilderness medical preparedness and execution trail food logistics and hiking group composition
  • Coordination of day hikes and fitness check of all participants prior to the start of the program
  • Supervision and training of Sierra Summer student leaders
  • Recruitment and registration of student participants
  • Securing of certified guide services if required
  • Securing and maintaining all necessary commercial special use and/or educational use permits for Sierra wilderness national forest and/or National Park areas
  • Maintain or supervise physical upkeep and keep record of all gear inventory and regularly purchase new gear as needed
  • Facilitating and potentially assisting in the execution of Sierra Summer Program(s) community core curriculum and other community trainings and events.

Qualifications

Required:


  • 100 hours of trail leadership and guiding experience in the Sierra Nevada

  • WFR certification on current and active status including current Epipen protocols and authorizations (or willingness to obtain certification upon hire provided by employer)

Preferred:


  • Experience in leadership teaching in various modalities and settings and group dynamics


Environmental Conditions:


  • Outdoors with possible exposure to noise dust temperature changes and other varying environmental conditions

  • May drive personal or University vehicles to appointments.

  • Public contact position requiring appropriate apparel personal hygiene and grooming.


Physical Demands:


  • Weather Conditions may affect outdoor activities which are always at the mercy of the weather and the adverse impacts that this may cause.

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Employee must be able to communicate with others to exchange information including both over the telephone and in-person communication with callers and community members.

University Information

$17.00 to $20.50 is the hourly compensation for this role and reflects what Fresno Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications experience and internal equity. In addition to compensation FPU offers a competitive benefits package.
