Job Summary

Job Summary

Responsible for the service delivery of the data center infrastructure. Oversees the deployment maintenance and administration of the most highly complex computing hardware virtualization software operating systems storage technologies backup technologies application software and integrated solutions. Monitors system performance and capacity and tracks performance trends. Participates in planning and budgeting activities required to maintain the Information Technology (IT) infrastructure. Researches industry trends and helps establish the IT infrastructure roadmap. Consults with departments to understand service requirements and to implement the appropriate integrated services.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is a job classification within the Information Technology job family. Leads the work of technical staff engaged in deploying maintaining and administering the compute storage operating systems and virtual environment comprising the IT data center infrastructure. Functions as technical expert providing tactical direction contributing to strategic planning for systems services supervising staff and coordinating closely with higher level management to meet user and organizational requirements in accordance with strategic and organizational goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides technical leadership and direction to the IT infrastructure teams.
  • Participates in planning and budgeting for the necessary hardware software training and staffing necessary to maintain IT data center infrastructure and services.
  • Leads and oversees the work of subordinate technical systems staff and functions as a technical expert. Trains staff and coordinates systems activities. Assists in appraising performance discipline and hiring decisions.
  • Designs system architecture for data center operations such as compute store applications operating systems and integrated solutions.
  • Develops and maintains current system operations and backup procedures and ensures data/media recoverability.
  • Prepares highly complex systems specifications and technical documentation for applications.
  • Develops recommends and implements system policies and standards and ensures adherence to approved security and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Consults with departments on proper systems selection and automation designs to meet business objectives while maintaining full integration with other networks and resources.
  • Coordinates the evaluation of vendor products and recommends purchases consistent with the organizations short-term and long-term objectives.
  • Tracks performance trends and makes recommendations for service delivery and process improvement.
  • Coordinates work performed by outside vendors and monitors vendor service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree in Computer Science Information Systems or a directly related field AND eight (8) years of relevant work experience including two (2) years of team lead supervisory or management experience;
OR
Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.

Licenses Registrations Certifications or Special Requirements:
Valid Texas Drivers License.

Preferred:
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE).
VMware Certified Professional (VCP).
Work experience to include three (3) year of systems analysis process redesign work and/or data manipulation and analysis;

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

  • Data Center Architecture.

  • Supervisory principles practices and techniques.
  • Policies practices procedures and terminology of assigned function.
  • Federal State Local and County applicable laws rules regulations and guidelines.
  • Vendor and service level agreement (SLA) management.
  • Budget preparation and office management.
  • Computer equipment to include word processing spreadsheets databases and a variety of software packages.
Skill in:
  • Supervising staff allocating resources and evaluating projects.
  • Leadership collaboration and negotiation techniques.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Both verbal and written communication including presentations and communicating technical issues in nontechnical language.
Ability to:
  • Provide technical leadership to IT staff with diverse responsibilities and skill sets.
  • Design install manage and monitor the most highly complex systems operating system software and applications.
  • Manage time well perform multiple tasks and organize diverse activities.
  • Demonstrate strong customer services skills.
  • Translate policies and objectives into ideas and applications web-based information products.
  • Research compile analyze interpret and prepare a variety of memorandums or reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental clientele representatives of outside agencies and providers other County employees and officials and the general public.

Work Environment & Other Information

Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 35-40 pounds occasionally visual acuity speech and hearing hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and office equipment. Subject to standing sitting walking climbing crawling bending stooping crouching kneeling pushing pulling reaching twisting balancing repetitive motion and squatting to perform the essential functions. Subject to exposure to variations in extreme heat cold mechanical fume/odor and dust/mites.

Travis County employees play an important role in business continuity. As such employees can be assigned to business continuity efforts outside of normal job functions.

Work Hours: 8 am - 5 pm Monday-Friday.
