This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of Mental Health G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital 220 Faison Drive Columbia SC 29203.

As the Nursing Assistant under the supervision of the Registered Nurse you will perform therapeutic care assist patients in meeting their needs and assist patients performing activities of daily living (ADL). You will also assist in providing and maintaining a safe therapeutic environment. This position requires the ability to work with all genders in the Adult and Child and Adolescent populations.

Responsibilities for the Nursing Assistant (Non-Certified) include:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Nursing Care Plan (NCP) and Treatment Plan as it relates to providing nursing care. Participate in qualitycontrol monitoring and peer review as assigned.
  • Provide care for patients with mental illnesses substance abuse aggressive behavior or suicidal tendencies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of therapeutic communication skills takes under consideration age specific competencies and culturally diverse patients.
  • Identify the need for and perform basic care/activities of daily living for patients.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Standard Precautions and perform Environmental checks.
  • Assist in caring for patients with behavioral/physical problems.
  • Provide basic care for patients requiring Special Precautions Seclusion Restraints and supportive Protective Restraints; follows policy on meeting patients special needs for hygiene nutrition toileting fluids and ADLs.
  • Participate in maintaining a clean and therapeutic environment by being productively occupied at all times and meeting the needs of the patients.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED.
Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds; ability to see hear at normal volumes stand walk reach pull stoop bend and climb at least two (2) flights of stairs. Ability to tolerate noise level and circulate in patient areas for long periods. Must be able to work with repetitive patient behaviors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

Additional Comments

Post hire employees must:

  • Have successful completion of basic in-service training.
  • Have ability to perform MAPS/MANDT Techniques.
  • Be able to perform therapeutic care to assist patients in meeting their needs and perform activities of daily living while maintaining an individualized approach based on patients needs culture religion and age.
