Program Overview
The Third Street Womens Residence using a client-centered trauma-informed approach provides transitional shelter and supportive services to 79 homeless women with behavioral concerns like substance use and mental health seeking permanent housing. Staff support residents in developing life skills managing mental health conditions and connecting them to community-based resources to achieve stability in permanency.
Position Overview
The Porter Housekeeper is responsible for maintaining a clean safe and welcoming environment within a 24-hour residential shelter serving women experiencing homelessness and behavioral health challenges. This role is essential to supporting the daily operations of the program and ensuring a respectful and well-maintained space for both residents and staff in a fast-paced high-demand environment. Successful candidates will demonstrate professionalism reliability strong attention to detail and the ability to remain calm and solution-oriented in challenging situations. The ideal candidate is adaptable dependable and committed to supporting the mission of the program through consistent and quality service. Flexibility in scheduling including availability for weekends and holidays as needed is important to effectively support the 24-hour nature of the shelter environment.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Minimum of 3 years experience in building maintenance custodial or related roles
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Basic computer literacy preferred or demonstrated ability and willingness to learn required systems and technology
- Familiarity with basic hand and power tools preferred or demonstrated ability to safely learn and use such tools
- Strong basic problem-solving skills with the ability to assess situations and identify practical solutions
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment including lifting heavy objects
- Ability to maintain clear and appropriate professional boundaries when interacting with residents staff stakeholders vendors and visitors.
- Reliability and accountability with a demonstrated record of consistent attendance.
- This position requires dependable attendance and schedule flexibility to support a 24/7 residential shelter operation and department needs including weekends holidays schedule adjustments and occasional overtime as needed to support programmatic and maintenance needs.
- CPR/First Aid certification required within the first 3 months of employment
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a clean safe and sanitary environment in compliance with NYC Department of Health NYC Fire Department OTDA DHS and other regulatory requirements
- Clean and sanitize all bathrooms offices common areas all floors and the elevator daily
- Dust and wipe surfaces including telephones windows windowsills and televisions
- Remove trash and maintain orderly waste management
- Prepare client areas for intake and move-outs
- Identify and report maintenance issues or safety hazards by submitting a work order
- Assist in maintaining building equipment and supplies
- Assist in conducting inventories
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor
Essential Physical Functions
- Ability to lift 2050 lbs.
- Ability to stand walk and climb multiple flights of stairs for extended periods
- Ability to perform physically demanding cleaning tasks
- Must be able to work onsite in the Lower East Side
