Description of Work

The position is located in the Hearings Division of the Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH). The Office of Administrative Hearings serves as a quasi-judicial tribunal for the expedient independent and impartial adjudication of contested cases. Its mission is to provide a neutral forum for handling administrative hearings for certain state agencies with respect for the dignity of individuals and their due process rights. This position is an integral part of the OAH fulfilling its purpose and mission.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

This is a part-time position located in Raleigh North Carolina. Salary up to $26000.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide support to an Administrative Law Judge which includes managing and scheduling cases for hearing on behalf of the Administrative Law Judge. Employee oversees all phases of a contested case beginning when a petition is filed with the OAH Clerks Office and thereafter using subject matter knowledge of Article 3 & 3A of Chapter 150B. The position will draft compose and file legal documents from information retrieved in case files handwritten drafts and/or electronic submissions. This employee independently establishes an overall plan for scheduling managing and maintaining the Judges monthly dockets including meeting multiple deadlines organizing calendars and filing pleadings. This employee is responsible for oral and written communications among the Administrative Law Judges litigants agency staff and attorneys. This employee is the primary individual responsible for pre-hearing preparation of contested cases and drafts orders for ALJ review.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies


Experience drafting legal documents and ability to edit such documents for grammar spelling and citation errors.

Experience using Microsoft Office (Word Excel Outlook and PowerPoint)

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from an appropriately accredited institution for paralegal training; or Bachelors degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of substantive paralegal experience; or High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and five years of paralegal experience performing delegated substantive legal work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
