Main Function
Provide respiratory care services in accordance with physician orders departmental protocols policies and procedures under the supervision of the System Director or designated charge therapist.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Skills:
Maintain knowledge of various methods of oxygen delivery and adjust delivery devices specific to patient age and condition
Assess implement and document respiratory care needs for patients post-discharge
Administer respiratory therapy treatments via various modalities for medication delivery volume expansion and bronchial hygiene
Initiate maintain and discontinue mechanical ventilators (invasive and non-invasive)
Perform airway management and suctioning procedures
Perform arterial and capillary blood sampling with proper handling and documentation
Analyze blood gas specimens and troubleshoot analyzers
Perform pulmonary function testing per ATS guidelines
Assist with bronchoscopy procedures and specimen handling
Obtain 12-lead EKGs of good quality
Perform functional checks on patients respiratory therapy equipment (CPAP BiPAP)
Deliver oxygen tanks and maintain RT equipment
Obtain nasal specimens for respiratory testing with proper specimen transport
Patient Care & Professionalism:
Maintain confidentiality and follow patient rights policies
Conduct patient identification prior to administering treatments or sampling
Organize and prioritize workload while functioning as part of the team
Maintain composure during crisis situations
Assess patient for respiratory therapy needs educational needs and pain level
Demonstrate effective conflict resolution and problem-solving
Conduct self professionally with all customers and patients
Document all pertinent information with correct time documentation
Explain procedures and treatments to patients and families in a pleasant respectful manner
Follow attendance and punctuality policies
Participate in mandatory in-services and department meetings
Assist with learning needs of students and new employee orientation
Assume charge therapist role when assigned
Adhere to infection control universal precautions and safety policies
Participate in quality improvement activities
Requirements
Education (Required):
Licensed as a Respiratory Therapist by the State of New York (or eligible within 12 months)
Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the NBRC (or eligible within 12 months of obtaining NYS Technician License)
Experience (Preferred):
One year recent experience as a Respiratory Therapist preferred
0-30 years of healthcare/respiratory experience considered
Certifications & Requirements:
Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within 1 year of hire date
English language proficiency required
