Job Summary
Introduction
The Maryland InsuranceAdministration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Marylands$49 billion insurance industry and protects consumers by monitoring andenforcing insurers and insurance professionals compliance with Statelaw. Staff members are subject matter experts who serve as a resource forlawmakers consumers and other public and private entities.
The MIA is charged with a broad range of responsibilities including thelicensure of insurance carriers and insurance producers (brokers/agents)operating in Maryland the conduct of financial examinations of companies tomonitor financial solvency and the review and approval of rates and contractforms. The MIA investigates reports of consumer fraud and consumercomplaints about life health automobile homeowners and/or propertyinsurance. Insurance carriers are subject to market conduct examinationsand other actions to monitor compliance with Maryland law. The MIA alsohas a unit dedicated to consumer education and outreach which participates inhundreds of events and reaches thousands of individual consumers annually.

POSITION DUTIES
The MIA isrecruiting to fill aComplaints Investigator I position in the Life and Health Division. A ComplaintsInvestigator I represents the entry level of work investigating consumercomplaints concerning life and health insurance issues which involves communicatingwith the public in writing and by telephone. Under the supervision of managementthe Complaints Investigator I conducts an investigation by reading thecomplaint identifying the issues and asking the company written Complaints Investigator I reads and analyzes responses insurance policiesand documents; applies relevant insurance laws; and recommends a determinationof whether the company has violated the law. If there is no violation theComplaints Investigator I explains to the complainant in writing the reasonsa company did not violate the law. The Complaints Investigator I also answersincoming calls from consumers and providers offering them assistance anddirection with their complaints; and assists with hearing preparation ifneeded.
A successful Complaints Investigator I will possessgood customer service skills and strong verbal and written communicationskills and will have the ability to read and understand statutes andregulations pay attention to details handle fluctuating caseloads and meetstandards for timely handling of complaint files.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelorsdegree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Experience: None.
Note:
1-Four years experience in life/health insurance industry as claimsprocessor underwriter and investigator or in a related insurance area cansubstitute for the minimum requirements as stated above.
2-Three (3) years experience working within the Maryland InsuranceAdministration or another States insurance regulatory agency in a life/healthinsurance capacity as an investigator examiner enforcement officer customerservice representative or administrative support capacity can be substitutedfor the education requirements.
