Job Description

Texas State Technical College is tasked with contributing to the educational and economic development of the State of Texas through providing advanced technical programs. The Advocacy & Resource Center Coach position is crucial in providing services that assist students in meeting their basic needs of food shelter clothing transportation child care and others to increase student persistence. This position provides front line services to students. As an Enrollment Management team member this position will seek knowledge of and pledges to actively engage in a Culture of Caring striving to respond systematically to student needs and remove barriers that may prevent students from achieving their personal and professional goals. The effectiveness of this position will be determined through lead measures and goals focused on student retention completion and placement which contribute to goals for the Enrollment Management division and college as a whole. This position reports to the assigned leader at their campus and is responsible for upholding the policies and practices consistent with the College mission and values of excellence accountability service and integrity.

Essential Functions

  • Employee will demonstrate TSTC Core values of Excellence Accountability Service and
    Integrity with internal and external stakeholders customers students and members of the
    community.

This position will provide student services for the Advocacy & Resource Center. Types of duties
include but are not limited to:

  • Provides front line services to students including but not limited to a food pantry clothing closet a lactation room transportation resources etc.

  • Coordinates events that provide awareness and support to TSTC community and is responsible for assisting students with services.

  • Coordinates TSTCs support services provided under Perkins.

  • Helps facilitate timely and responsive emergency aid for students.

  • Coordinates refers and tracks students who are at risk of dropping out of school who are referred to the Advocacy & Resource Center

  • May provide services to more than one campus location.

  • Responsible for collecting of the Drug Free Schools Act information for report.

  • Evaluate and monitor program needs identify unmet needs and revise services as needed.

This position will network with community agencies to deliver services that will aid students in persisting through college. Types of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinates community partnerships to aid students with food insecurity housing transportation and other basic needs services.

  • Supervises Child Care program and referrals. Where appropriate serves as Liaison for the on-campus childcare centers.

  • Collaborates and coordinates with Financial Aid to facilitate timely and responsive emergency aid for students.

  • Coordinates community and health services referrals in order to promote retention.

  • Collaborates with outside entities to promote awareness of TSTC students needs.

  • Communicates with the community advisory committee to provide services for students facing barriers outside of the classroom

  • Utilize data to inform event schedule and programs

  • Evaluate and monitor program needs identify unmet needs and revise services as needed

This position will foster communication. Types of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Respond in a timely manner to all student inquiries received via email text and phone systems.

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to respond to provide needed resources for students through a variety of communication methods including in-person inquiry telephone email and other communication modalities.

  • Possess a general understanding of college policies procedures requirements and effectively communicate them to students.

Education/Experience/Knowledge/Skills

  • Bachelors Degree or higher in social work or an appropriate field from an accredited
    college or university required. Masters degree and licensure preferred. Experience
    can substitute for educational requirement.

  • Two years of experience in social services and/or higher education. Practicum hours can count toward experience

  • Able to network with community to provide necessary resources for the TSTC student body.

  • Thorough knowledge of college policies procedures and requirements.

  • Skills in judgment and decision-making problem solving.

  • Ability to multitask.

  • Abilities in problem identification reasoning ability to develop original ideas to

  • solve problems.

  • Knowledge of the applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the position including the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.

  • Ability to relate to individuals and groups of students using communication counseling and problem-solving skills.

  • Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a service environment that is subject to frequent interruptions and skill in setting priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities.

  • Demonstrated computer proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word Excel etc) or equivalent software the internet email messaging and web-based software applications and experience using on-line student information systems. Advanced computer knowledge with the ability to understand and learn new on-line programs.

  • Ability to effectively professionally and tactfully interact and communicate both orally and in writing with students faculty staff and visitors. Skill in independently composing letters memos reports and written communication materials using correct spelling grammar punctuation composition text editing and proofreading skills.

  • Skill in accurate record keeping with strict attention to detail. Skill in organizing tasks documents and materials with efficiency and accuracy.
