As a paid intern youll gain hands-on experience work alongside industry professionals and see firsthand how your contributions support real-world engineering decisions and projects.

We are offering three intern positions to support professional staff in the Engineering and Floodplain Permitting Divisions. One position is available in the Floodplain Permitting Division and two are within the Engineering Division: the Special Projects Branch and the Engineering Application Development and River Mechanics Branch.

Although the Flood Control District has made great progress over the years building and operating flood control structures work remains to be done as the county continues to be one of the fastest growing in the United States. Our team helps citizens and public agencies make important decisions regarding flood protection in the Valley.

We Require

  • Junior/Senior level undergraduate or graduate student actively enrolled in one of the following or closely related degree programs: Civil Engineering Environmental Engineering Hydrology Physics Geography or Geology.

We Also Value

  • Clear communication skills both written and verbal

  • The ability to manage tasks efficiently and work independently when needed

  • Experience with Microsoft Office tools especially Excel

  • Familiarity with GIS tools and concepts (ArcGIS or ArcPro)

  • Coursework or academic exposure to water resources including hydrology and hydraulics

Job Contributions

Floodplain Permitting Division Intern

  • Learn about floodplain regulations and their application as you participate in the review of construction permits.

  • Assist with the Districts review of sand and gravel mining operations including participating in site visits with ongoing mining operations as a part of the Districts semi-annual inspection process.

  • Support the technical review of Letters of Map Changes (CLOMR/LOMR) while building your understanding of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling used in these submittals.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Projects Branch Intern

  • Assist in the development and preparation of hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) model input datasets and perform post-processing of model outputs including analysis using FLO-2D and HEC-RAS 2D

  • Support the technical review and refinement of engineering reports for Emergency Action Plans for the District dams and research efforts contributing to updates of the countys Drainage Design Manuals.

  • Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to develop spatial datasets support H&H modeling and contribute to the production of technical exhibits and mapping.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Engineering Application Development and River Mechanics Branch Intern

  • Conduct research and gather data for river mechanics (scour and sedimentation) hydrology hydraulics fluid mechanics broader water resources engineering and general civil engineering design.

  • Collaborate with software engineers to support the development and testing of engineering tools including reviewing river mechanics-related projects.

  • Assist with computations engineering software modeling and preliminary design for river mechanics hydraulics and hydrology

  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Exerting up to 20 lbs. occasionally 10 lbs. frequently or negligible amounts constantly OR requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

  • Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

  • Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures wetness/humidity respiratory hazards and noise and vibration.
