Operating Engineer C
Job Summary
Preference will be given to qualified employees as defined in the Full-Time Support Staff Collective Agreement. Should a suitable candidate not be found external candidates will be considered.
Under the direction of the Manager Facilities Operations the Engineer maintains and repairs all mechanical equipment associated with the heating cooling ventilation fire protection and plumbing/drain systems. The incumbent is the main contact for outside consultants vendors insurance adjusters etc. regarding Colleges building mechanical equipment. The incumbent assigns tasks to junior Facilities Services staff and contractors and confirms satisfactory completion of assigned tasks. The incumbent is responsible for keeping records of maintenance and repairs as well as for completing paperwork for vendor transactions to ensure inventory is in stock. The Engineer also provides details to the Supervisor on issues that may realize savings and/or prevent problems to the College community.
What Youll Be Doing
- Operating maintaining and controlling all HVAC (heating ventilation and Air Conditioners) equipment;
- Maintaining and repairing all mechanical equipment associated with plumbing/drain systems and responsible for roof maintenance;
- Operating and maintaining fire and life safety systems and equipment including emergency generators sprinklers systems stand pipe systems hydrants and fire pumps;
- Analysing output from Direct Digital Control Building Automation Systems (BAS) and adjusting to suit requirement of the College community;
- Investigating diagnosing and solving problems within the control systems of all the HVAC and fire equipment such as: SCUs (Stand Alone DDC control units): calibration of room thermostats; heating and cooling loops; mixed air return air and fresh air damper calibrations and adjustments; humidity sensor and control circuit adjustments;
- Delegating and overseeing the activities of outside contractors and/or other operating engineers;
- Performing administrative duties to facilitate smooth department operation such as preparing requisitions for material requirements contractor bids equipment/parts inventory;
- Acting as primary on-site contact for mechanical maintenance; liaising with Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) and other regulatory agencies ensuring maintenance of boilers/fuel burning equipment is performed to required standards and ensuring directives resulting from TSSA inspections are addressed;
- Participating in on-call duties;
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
About You
You have the skills and knowledge to work with an increasingly diverse student and staff population as well as a proven commitment to anti-oppression equity and inclusion.
The successful candidate will also meet the following requirements:
- 4th class Stationary Engineer certificate along with a minimum of 8 years of experience as a Stationary Engineer at a large-scale institutional facility preferably in a College University or hospital setting (or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience).
- Completion of the Building Environmental Systems Operator Class I and II programs (or equivalent).
- Working knowledge of MS Word and Excel email electronic calendars BAS software and project software.
- In-depth knowledge of facility mechanical systems operations and maintenance is required along with excellent mechanical diagnostic skills.
- Strong analytical and communication skills as well as the ability to handle multiple tasks without losing focus on priorities.
- Physical ability to perform labour intensive work as heavy lifting (over 20kg) will be occasionally required.
