Production Welder
A production welder is a professional who uses various welding equipment and methods to join metal pieces or repair metal components. Some of the common duties and responsibilities of a welder are:
- Reading and interpreting blueprints drawings and specifications to plan layout and procedures.
- Determining the appropriate weld settings and methods based on requirements and materials.
- Setting up components for welding according to specifications and safety standards.
- Operating manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical horizontal or overhead).
- Aligning clamping and securing metal parts before welding.
- Welding components using different techniques such as TIG MIG.
- Inspecting welded surfaces to discover flaws and ensure quality.
- Maintaining and cleaning welding equipment and tools.
To be a successful welder one needs to have the following skills and qualifications:
- Proven experience as a welder in a relevant field or industry must take a weld test to determine skill and placement.
- Some knowledge of different kinds of metal and their properties.
- Ability to read and follow technical documents and instructions.
- Skill in using various welding equipment and tools safely and effectively.
- Attention to safety detail and accuracy.
- Physical strength stamina and dexterity.
- Professional certification (e.g. AWS welding certificate) or completion of an apprenticeship program is preferred but not required.
- Minimum physical requirements include lifting moderate weight up to 50lbs standing for long periods.
- A high school diploma or GED is preferred but not required.
