Overview:
The Director of Stores is a senior leader within Housing Works Business Enterprises responsible for the overall performance operational excellence and financial results of the Thrift Shops portfolio. This role leads and develops multi-site store teams drives sales growth and profitability and ensures a consistent high-quality customer and donor experience aligned with Housing Works brand standards retail budget and Strategic Plan.
Partnering closely with the Thrift Administrative Team and cross-functional leaders the Director of Stores sets operational strategy leverages performance data to drive continuous improvement and ensures all stores reflect Housing Works mission values and commitment to community impact.
Essential Job Functions
Primary:
Drive sales and profitability across Housing Works Thrift Shops by working with Store Managers to develop skilled store teams and to build a sales and customer focused culture in stores which includes both the retail and donor experience
Set strategy across all shops and provide operational expertise to ensure that shops are supported with the necessary tools to improve sales growth leveraging metrics to evolve the shops to be KPI focused resulting in improved performance
Maximize profitability across the network of retail shops including through analyzing sales and anticipating sales trends staffing and staff/volunteer development and working with other Directors/Managers responsible for merchandise planning in store visual merchandising operational support and marketing
Recruit hire develop and motivate store management teams identifying training needs and ensuring operational compliance resulting in accountability and learning systems that are used effectively to build a strong management talent pipeline
In partnership with Marketing develop and execute the annual promotional strategy providing store feedback and showing the agility to adapt strategies to changing market conditions and consumer behaviors
Secondary:
In partnership with Development plan and execute Housing Works annual fundraising events
Demonstrate excellent internal and external customer service and growing this within the retail shops and amongst support teams
Demonstrate excellent teamwork and growing this within the retail shops and amongst the support team
In partnership with the Asset Protection Manager ensure that the Policy and Procedure manual is up to date and accurate and that operational processes are consistently evaluated for improvements and greater efficiency
Work closely with the Vice President of Retail & Marketing to ensure that retail shops are accountable for demonstrating Housing Works values and complying with all legal and commercial obligations and Housing Works policies and procedures
Other Functions
Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending training meetings/sessions and through independent study.
Be a Housing Works Ambassador by knowing and communicating the Mission Statement outreaching to the community and participating in a minimum of three direct in-person actions and four alternative format actions per year aimed at ending the twin crises of homelessness and HIV/AIDS.
Education:
4 year College Degree
Qualifications/Requirements:
Minimum 3 to 5 years multi-store management experience or the equivalent. Demonstrated success in driving sales and improving store profitability across multiple locations is essential
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Knowledge of secondhand resale or value-based retail environments strongly preferred
Proven ability to lead develop and inspire large diverse teams across multiple locations
Working knowledge of HR best practices employee relations and labor compliance

Essential Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
Flexibility in schedule; weekends and holidays are required; required to work over 40 hours a week as necessary
Frequently communicates (exchanges information converse with express oneself) with staff vendors supervisors and community at large
Frequently required to traverse public transportation to attend meetings and/or participate in presentations and training seminars
Excellent verbal and written communications skills articulations and instruction of policy and procedure. Coach staff in accordance with organizational policy and best practices
Frequently required to work at a computer approximately 50% of the time 50% of the time will be interacting with staff and customers this position is a hybrid position 40% permitted from home 60% must be on site and in person
Occasionally required to stand walk kneel and bend for long periods of time
Occasionally exchange information in communication with individuals who are agitated confrontational or difficult patrons from a variety of socio-economic cultural and religious backgrounds
Occasionally required to lift a minimum of 40 pounds
