ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is an administrative support unit reporting to the Director of Risk Management. EHS has offices on both the Fredericton and Saint John campuses with a mandate to lead and support the universitys compliance with the New Brunswick Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant and related municipal provincial and federal addition EHS provides oversight for the universitys biological radiation chemical and fire safety programs. The office provides guidance training and oversight to ensure safe work practices; assists with hazard and risk assessments; supports incident prevention and response; and promotes a strong safety culture across all university operations.

Standard Work Hours: Mon - Fri 8:15 am - 4:30 pm 36.25 hours per week

Salary Range: $46251 - $57812 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Manager EHS this Occupational Health and Safety Officer (Training) is responsible for the oversight of University-wide safety training programs and initiatives and supporting the mandate of EHS by assisting various safety committees participating in drafting and reviewing of policies standard operating procedures and educational information on relevant safety issues and serving as a resource for issues related to occupational health and safety.

  • Provide occupational health and safety guidance and support across UNB campuses.
  • Design develop and maintain training programs delivered in person virtually and through selfpaced online formats.
  • Conduct training needs assessments and collaborate with academic and administrative units to meet departmentspecific requirements.
  • Coordinate external training services including First Aid/CPR Transportation of Dangerous Goods crane and rigging and fallarrest training.
  • Maintain training records and monitor completion compliance status and refresher requirements.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness using feedback tools metrics and performance indicators and recommend improvements.
  • Support the operations and mandate of the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
  • Schedule and coordinate committee meetings prepare agendas and document minutes.
  • Support committee cochairs and follow up on action items to ensure timely completion.
  • Plan and execute biannual fire evacuation drills in compliance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
  • Lead postdrill analysis and reporting identify improvement opportunities and communicate findings to management.
  • Deliver fire safety education coaching and followup guidance to staff and building occupants.
  • Review and update campuswide fire safety plans annually to ensure accuracy and alignment with safety standards.
  • Maintain and administer SharePoint and internet sites to support effective information sharing and access to safety resources.
  • Develop write and update policies procedures and standard operating procedures in support of the EHS mandate.
  • Design and implement a campuswide safety communication plan including alerts newsletters web content and targeted messaging.
  • Coordinate emergency response activities with Campus Security Facilities Management and external emergency services.
  • Support postincident documentation investigation rootcause analysis and identification of training or procedural improvements.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Post-secondary diploma or certificate in occupational health and safety or bachelors degree in an applicable field (e.g. science engineering business administration etc.); an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
  • 1-3 years of related experience preferably in a post-secondary environment.

Additional Strengths

  • Proficiency with software/computers
  • Ability to interpret and apply technical environmental health and safety regulations and guidelines
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience with on-line course delivery software and website/SharePoint maintenance is an asset.
  • First-Aid/CPR Transportation of Dangerous Good Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems certifications are considered an asset.
