Fort Valley State University the only 1890 land-grant university in Georgia is a comprehensive institution that provides an education to over 2800 students including graduate students. The university is located in the town of Fort Valley in Peach County the original site of the states peach industry. Its 1365-acre (5.52 km2) campus is Georgias second-largest public university in area.

JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for directing the universitys library services operations.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Directs library operations and provides strategic leadership for the day-to-day management of library facilities and services.
- Manages and supervises library professional and support staff.
- Works with academic departments in providing academic program reviews and other reports and to maintain library accreditation.
- Assesses library services and resources in support of the universitys research and teach needs.
- Teaches information literacy classes.
- Provides research support to students and faculty.
- Oversees the development of strategic plans for the development and growth of the library.
- Prepares and manages budgets.
- Coordinates and integrates library assessment initiatives and improvement outcomes to promote an information literacy environment in the library that supports the needs of a diverse and multicultural campus community.
- Serves on university committees; attends university and University System of Georgia meetings.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of professional library practices and standards.
- Knowledge of library technology including databases integrated library systems and emerging technology trends and applications.
- Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of university personnel and budget management policies.
- Knowledge of higher education practices and standards.
- Knowledge of current and developing trends in library management.
- Knowledge of library collection development principles.
- Knowledge of university purchasing policies and procedures.
- Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority.
- Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs.
- Skill in decision making and problem solving.
- Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs assigns work in terms of library goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences reports and observation of library activities.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include library policies and procedures employee and student handbooks USG ethics policies copyright laws and the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association. These guidelines require judgment selection and interpretation in application. This position develops library guidelines.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of varied management administrative and supervisory duties. The variety of tasks to be managed contributes to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to direct library services operations for the university. Success in this position results in the provision of quality library services to students faculty staff and the general public.

- Contacts are typically with co-workers faculty staff students community patrons representatives of other libraries vendors and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information to resolve problems or to motivate or influence persons or to provide services.
PHYSICIAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting standing walking bending crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects climbs ladders distinguishes between shades of color and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over Assistant Director of Library Services (1) Library Technology Coordinator (1) Librarian (1) Library Associate (1) and Library Assistant (1).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters degree in a course of study related to the occupational field required.
- More than five years of related experience required.
