Project Overview

A provincial government is driving a major digital transformation to deliver simpler more efficient and citizen-focused services. The Digital Design and Delivery Division (DDD) leads this initiative leveraging agile methodologies human-centered design and modern data practices.

We are seeking a Data Engineer to join cross-functional teams delivering service innovation program reviews and digital transformation initiatives across multiple ministries.

Role Overview

As a Data Engineer you will design and build scalable data solutions while also contributing to advanced analytics. You will collaborate with product owners analysts and engineers to deliver high-quality data-driven insights that support government decision-making.

Key Responsibilities Data Engineering
  • Design build and maintain data pipelines across cloud (Azure AWS GCP) and on-prem environments
  • Develop and optimize dimensional models (star/snowflake schemas)
  • Build and manage ETL/ELT pipelines using SSIS and Azure Data Factory (ADF)
  • Integrate data from APIs SQL/NoSQL databases and flat files
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment and monitoring
  • Ensure data quality governance and security (access control encryption)
  • Develop scalable data lakes warehouses and curated data marts
Data Analytics
  • Analyze datasets to identify trends patterns and insights
  • Develop dashboards and reports using Power BI and DAX
  • Build statistical and predictive models using Python/R
  • Translate technical findings into business insights for stakeholders
  • Support Agile delivery and enable self-service analytics
Mandatory Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science IT or related field
  • 5 years of experience as a Data Engineer/Data Analyst
  • 5 years working with diverse data sources (cloud & on-prem)
  • 3 years experience with:
    • Data quality governance and security
    • Dimensional modeling (star/snowflake schemas)
    • Reporting & dashboards (Power BI or similar)
    • Data migration across platforms
    • SSIS Azure Data Factory APIs
  • 2 years experience with Git CI/CD pipelines and modern development workflows
Nice to Have
  • Experience in application development
  • Experience working in government/public sector environments
  • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL MongoDB Azure data services
  • Exposure to AI/ML tools and workflows
Work Environment
  • Remote within Canada
  • Occasional travel to Edmonton (if required)
  • Must provide own equipment
  • Collaboration via Microsoft Teams
Security Requirements
  • Criminal Record Check (mandatory)
  • Potential Enhanced Security Clearance (if required)
  • Eligibility for higher-level clearances (e.g. RCMP Top Secret) may be required
