JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose of Position

Under the direction of the Manager perform computerized tomographic procedures of designated anatomical areas as requested by physicians by applying ionizing radiation to patients according to established practices and procedures in a manner consistent with prescribed radiation protection safety standards.

Description

Perform computed tomography scanning procedures at a technical level requiring constant attention to technical detail requiring independent judgment ingenuity and initiative to apply prescribed ionizing radiologic diagnosis. Operates control console for patients scan.

Selects proper imaging techniques.

Operates various peripheral hardware and equipment.

Maintain set-up and adjust equipment checking calibration and recalibrating as necessary.

Positions patient on examination table and adjusts immobilization devices as required to obtain optimum views of specified area of the body requested by physician as determined by department policy and procedure observing all health and safety precautions quality assurance and infection control standards.

Receive and review requests for radiologic studies.

Provide explanation of procedures and answer pertinent questions of patients to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation.

Assumes care for physical and psychological needs of patients during examinations and procedures to insure safety and comfort while preparing for and while undergoing computerized tomography procedures.

Assist physician and/or nurse with monitoring and treatment of patients during procedures.

Record all required information to provide permanent records of significant and/or functional anatomical or pathologic data obtained.

Apply principles of radiographic protection using beam restriction devices patient shielding skills and knowledge of applicable exposure factors to minimize radiation to patients and staff.

Coordinate work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency using and/or modifying established procedures to assure timely completion of work in conformance with department policies and procedures.

Evaluates images for technical quality.

Maintain adequate radiology records to assure proper identification.

Assist physician with administration of radiographic contrast media or its direct administration if trained and sanctioned by the radiologist.

Maintain a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and Procedures as they pertain to the job including the fire and disaster plans.

Comply with Infection Control policies and procedures.

Participates in activities which promote professional self-growth and development; meeting minimum requirements for continuing education as directed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and Massachusetts State Licensing.

Maintain an ethical relationship with patients physicians personnel and guests and insures patient confidentiality at all times.

Performs other work related duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

Ability to read write and communicate in English.

High school graduate or GED.

Graduate an American Medical Association (AMA) Accredited Radiography Program.

Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

Valid Massachusetts State License in Radiation Control.

Must have certification from an accredited CT program or currently registered in CT by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists 3 years experience as a Radiologic Technologist OR 1 year current (within the last 5 years) CT Tech experience.
