The Undergraduate Education Office has a great job opportunity for a Pre-HealthAdvisorto work at the University of Miami.

The Pre-HealthAdvisorprovides general support and advising for Pre-Health programs such as Pre-Medical Pre-Dental Pre-Vet Pre-PA and Pre-Podiatry due to the increasing number of schools in these pre-professional areas and their specific prerequisite requirements. Assists the Director of the Office of Pre-Health Advising and Mentoring and the Program Manager in the development organization production and evaluation of the special programs to achieve mission goals and objectives of the Pre-Health Office. Is familiar with university college and program policies and procedures ensuring program Advisor reports to the Program Manager.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Advising:

  • Conduct one-on-one advising sessions with pre-health students to help them plan and optimize their academic coursework ensuring they meet the prerequisites for their chosen healthcare programs.
  • Offer specialized guidance through individual advising sessions for students in special tracks such as Pre-Med Pre-Vet Pre-PA Pre-Podiatry Pre-Dentistry and Pre-Pharmacy ensuring tailored support to meet the unique requirements.
  • Assess students interests strengths and career goals to recommend suitable healthcare fields and specializations that align with their aspirations.
  • Assist students in preparing applications for various health professional schools/programs (medical dental veterinary physician assistant) providing guidance on portfolio building personal statements curricular vitae and letters from evaluators.
  • Stay up to date on the admission requirements prerequisites and selection criteria of different health professional schools to provide accurate information.
  • Assist the office by writing committee letters for pre-health students professional school applications.
  • In consultation with the Director and Program Manager: drafts and initiates correspondence develops agendas maintains calendars assists in accumulation of reference materials and coordinates and attendsmeetings with Office of Admissions Central Advising and various relevant departments.
  • Works with the Program Manager to assist with facilitating events professional development activities undergraduate peer mentoring activities and medical school student mentoring and any additional academic support units throughout the University in support of the program goals.
  • Coordinates the collection compilation and analysis of activity data; drafts comprehensive statistical and narrative program reports and evaluations for the Directors review and monitors program effectiveness making suggestions for revisions as necessary.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Exceptional writing skills including knowledge of grammar spelling and punctuation are essential.
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize competing tasks to implement program activities.
  • Must be well-organized detail oriented and have strong computer knowledge (including spreadsheets and database software).
  • Knowledge of student recruitment advising and retention strategies.
  • Self-starter with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Experience working with cross-departmental personnel from diverse offices and programs is desirable.
  • Availability to work occasional nights and weekends as required.

Education Requirements (Essential Requirements):

  • Bachelors degree in related discipline.
  • Masters degree in STEM or science education discipline preferred.
  • A minimum of 1-year relevant experience
  • A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Prior experience with program coordination/administration preferred.
