The Department of Corrections is accepting applications for a Teacher at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland ME. This is a full-time year-round 224-day position with a primary purpose to teach the youth residing at the facility.

Job Description:
Provide ongoing instruction for students at the A.R. Gould School located at Long Creek Youth Development Center. Deliver multi-day classroom-based orientation (behavioral expectations school routines academic screening) and conduct literacy and math assessments to inform placement and IEP/504 planning. Balance orientation leadership with teaching duties progress monitoring and collaboration with facility staff and service providers for student grouping and goal setting.
Responsibilities included but not limited to:
- Lead a multi-day new student program emphasizing classroom routines behavior expectations school systems social-emotional supports and academic readiness.
- Administer standardized and curriculum-based screening assessments in literacy and mathematics; analyze results and recommend classroom placement and supports.
- Provide instruction and differentiate for individual needs.
- Collaborate daily with guidance counselors facility case managers mental-health providers security staff and families/guardians to coordinate educational and behavioral supports.
- Promote de-escalation strategies positive behavior interventions and trauma-informed instructional practices appropriate for a secure juvenile facility.
- Participate in staffing meetings IEP meetings and transition planning conferences; provide training or guidance to staff on classroom strategies and accommodations when requested.
- Maintain professional conduct consistent with Department of Corrections policies including adherence to safety security and confidentiality procedures.
- Complete required documentation attendance reporting assessment results and periodic compliance reports within established timelines.
- Cover additional duties as assigned which may include supervision mentoring or short-term assignments supporting school operations.

- Modern Juvenile security principles and practices.
Ability to:
- Teach at the middle school or secondary school level - general
- education courses.
- Assess student needs and develop/modify instruction as necessary.
- Work effectively as an individual and as part of a team.
- Work with and manage at-risk youth.
- Provide necessary accommodation and modifications for growth and success of all students.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelors degree in education or related field.
Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements:(These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class)
- Maine Teaching Certification for grades 6-12 as issued by the Department of Education.
