Job Summary

The Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics (IBG) is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Research Fellow to support and help drive a dynamic fast-growing research program.

The laboratory works at the interface of basic science clinical research and industry to develop innovative zebrafish disease models that recapitulate human neurological disorders including motor neuron diseases epilepsy and neurodegenerative conditions. By integrating genetics chemical genetics advanced microscopy and high-throughput automated behavioural platforms our research aims not only to understand disease mechanisms but also to identify therapeutic pathways and candidate drugs ().

The successful candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment and will be expected to communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders including clinicians pharmaceutical partners and academic researchers.

Importantly both the laboratory head and the Institute are strongly committed to the career development of the appointed Research Fellow. Active support will be provided to enable the candidate to rapidly develop independence and secure their own funding through competitive grants and/or fellowship applications.

Key responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Conduct research that contributes to the research objectives of the Institute.
  • Develop and maintain a good publication record in high-impact international esteemed peer-reviewed journals.
  • Apply to external funding agency for fellowship and grant. The fellow will benefit from the strong support of the group leader.
  • Manage the preparation and formulation of publications presentations and research reports arising from the research.
  • Assist in mentoring and supervision of higher degree research candidates.
  • Supervise Research Assistants and technical staff.
  • Contribute to teaching activities as required.

This is a fixed term (12 months with possibility for extensions) full-time position primarily based at Griffith University Brisbane South (Nathan). As Griffith is a multi-site University you may be required to work across other locations.  Griffith Universitys campuses are located on the lands of the Yugarabul Yuggera Jagera Turrbal Yugambeh and Kombumerri peoples.

Salary Range
The full-time equivalent base salary will be Research Fellow Grade 1 in the range $91705 - $107420 per annum plus 17% superannuation. The total FTE package will be in the range $107295 - $125682 per annum.


Qualifications :

The successful candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent qualifications/work experience in a relevant field such as molecular and cellular biology genetics or disease modelling using zebrafish as a model.

You will also have:

  • Extensive experience with the zebrafish model or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience with molecular biology and cloning.
  • Experience with microscopy.
  • Outstanding organisational skills and a strong commitment to teamwork.
  • Exceptional written communication skills.

The following would be desirable:

  • Demonstrated experience in embryo injection or equivalent techniques.
  • Experience using CRISPR/Cas9 methodologies.
  • Experience in drug screening and toxicology.
  • Experience in behavioural phenotyping including the use of automatic systems.
  • Proven experience in immunostaining methodologies.
