Job Summary
Engage in the development of complex embedded software systems for safetycritical defence and maritime applications with ALTEN Ltd. Join our team as an Embedded Software Engineer where youll work on the design development and integration of highintegrity software using modern C and embedded technologies. Youll collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver robust productionready code that underpins missioncritical systems contributing across the full software development lifecycle within a regulated environment.
Location: Manchester (Stockport)
Onsite: Hybrid up to 4 days per week on site
Seniority: Mid to Senior level roles available
Security Clearance: Candidates must be willing and eligible to obtain SC clearance.
Key Responsibilities
- Design develop and maintain embedded software for safetycritical systems
- Produce highquality efficient and maintainable code primarily using C with exposure to C Java and Python
- Work with hardware abstraction layers and lowlevel software components
- Apply highintegrity coding standards such as MISRA JSF HIC and AUTOSAR
- Perform code refactoring unit testing and static analysis to ensure software quality
- Contribute to modeldriven development using UML
- Collaborate within Agile development environments using modern ticketing and versioncontrol tools
- Support integration verification and validation activities across the software lifecycle
Qualifications :
Required Skills
- Strong experience in embedded software development
- Advanced proficiency in C/C within safetycritical or regulated environments
- Experience with unit testing and static analysis
- Knowledge of Linux OS programming and build tooling
- Understanding of realtime systems and realtime signal processing
- Familiarity with TCP/IP networking protocols and system architectures
- Experience working with Agile SDLC methodologies

- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team
- Strong problemsolving and analytical skills
- Comfortable working with complex requirements and system constraints
- Proactive mindset with a focus on quality and continuous improvement
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Software Engineering Computer Science Electronics Engineering or related discipline or relevant technical military background with equivalent experience.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with Java and Python in engineering applications
- Exposure to containerisation and virtualisation technologies
- Experience with CI/CD and build automation tools such as Jenkins or Bamboo
- Familiarity with GitLab JIRA or similar ticketing/versioncontrol systems
- Background in defence aerospace or other safetycritical industries
