We are now looking for an Enzyme Downstream Optimization Scientist to join us in Kalundborg where you will play a key role in improving enzyme downstream processes across our Danish manufacturing facilities.
This role sits at the intersection of process engineering biotechnology scaleup and data science. You will help unlock capacity improve process robustness and deliver cost savings by combining scientific insight experimental work production understanding and advanced analytics all in close collaboration with production.
The Role & Your Impact
As our new Downstream Optimization Scientist you will be central to improving enzyme recovery processes and delivering worldclass downstream performance. You will work handson with data lab-experiments and production trials to ensure we recover the full value the gold from our enzyme processes.
Welcome to Product and Process Development
You will join Product and Process Development a team of skilled scientists and technicians working in close collaboration with recovery operations across Novonesis. The working environment is built on a strong scientific foundation and characterized by innovation and continuous improvement in production. We solve problems through crossfunctional collaboration and work closely with global partners in Denmark China and the USA. Curiosity teamwork and the ability to translate science into tangible business impact are highly valued.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Optimizing downstream enzyme recovery processes using lab and pilotscale experiments statistical analysis and fullscale production trials
Designing and executing labscale experiments such as filtration tests solubility trials and scaledown studies to identify process bottlenecks
Supporting and validating optimization concepts through fullscale production trials
Applying data analysis and scripting (e.g. Python) to streamline data flows and enable datadriven decision making
Collaborating closely with production and laboratory technicians to unlock optimization opportunities
Working crossfunctionally with teams in fermentation recovery analytics digitalization and manufacturing in Denmark and internationally
Contributing to project execution where project management skills will be an advantage
Projects typically run 612 months and are strongly focused on delivering measurable business value.
What Youll Need to Be Successful
To succeed in this role you bring a strong analytical mindset and handson industrial experience with downstream or purification processes.
MSc or PhD preferred or minimum 2 years of industrial experience in downstream operations
Background in biotechnology chemical engineering bioprocess engineering data science (with a process focus) or a related field
Handson experience running lab or pilot experiments and translating results to fullscale production
Experience analyzing complex multivariate datasets from production or laboratory systems
Technical & Professional Skills
Ability to work with large datasets and demonstrated experience with a scripting language (e.g. Python)
Familiarity with statistical methods
Experience with Python/R JMP or similar tools
Experience working with SQL and relational databases
Understanding of enzyme production or bioprocessing
Ability to balance scientific rigor with practical business considerations
Strong communication skills in English (Danish is preferred)
Additional Skills & Interests We Value
While not required for the role several additional skills and interests would be considered strong advantages. These include experience working closely with manufacturing or production environments as well as an interest in scaling processes and translating laboratory insights into industrial reality. Previous exposure to cross-site or global collaboration is also valued along with project management experience in technical or scientific projects.
Ways of Working
This is an onsite role based in Kalundborg Denmark offered as a fulltime position with regular working hours. The role involves close interaction with production environments and there are no fixed travel requirements associated with the position. It is considered an advantage if you are already living close to Kalundborg or are willing to relocate to the area.
