General Summary:
Operates repairs and maintains the water/wastewater treatment plant facilities.
Essential Functions:
- Performs all the functions of the Operator Operator II and Operator III.
- Establishes and maintains effective sample procedures of plant operations for process control and effluent quality.
- Performs routine laboratory tests.
- Diagnoses operating problems and directs and performs necessary corrective action during work shift.
- Prepares required reports and maintains records according to established procedures.
- Directs assigns and trains employees in job-related tasks.
- Supervises the operation of a water/wastewater treatment plant or plant process on an assigned shift.
- Performs duties of Operations Manager in his/her absence when assigned.
- Performs operations and maintenance activities including taking samples and performing routine laboratory tests and analyses.
- Inspects equipment to locate needed repairs and maintenance.
- Monitors the radio and cell phone alarm system and notifies maintenance.
- Determines proper chemical flow rates.
- Participates in the training of plant operators and Operators in Training.
- Performs routine maintenance functions and custodial duties.
- Daily and punctual attendance in the office and/or job site or off-site locations is required.
- This position required being available on an on-call basis for emergencies
- Travel between work locations is required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

- Position reports to: Operations Manager
Level of supervision the employee receives:
- Works under general supervision; the employee receives assignments and is expected to carry them through to completion with substantial independence. Work is reviewed for adherence to instructions accuracy completeness and conformance to standard practice precedent or policy.
Level of supervision exercised:
- None however may direct the work of maintenance personnel.
Education Experience & Licensure and/or Certifications:
Education/Experience
- High School Diploma or possession of a GED Certificate (Required) Five years of experience operating water/wastewater treatment plants
Education/Experience Equivalency
- Out-of-state water and/or wastewater certification may be substituted for in-state certification on the condition that in-state certification be achieved within the first 12 months of employment.
Licensure and/or Certification
- Possession of a valid New Mexico State Drivers License.
- Level IV New Mexico water and/or wastewater Operator certification
