Job Summary
Role Overview
A Cardiac Scrub Nurse is a highly skilled theatre practitioner responsible for providing specialist perioperative care within cardiac surgery. The role focuses on maintaining a sterile environment supporting the surgical team and ensuring safe efficient delivery of complex cardiac procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and maintain a sterile field for cardiac surgical procedures
Scrub and assist during cardiac operations (e.g. CABG valve replacements thoracic procedures)
Ensure all surgical instruments equipment and consumables are available checked and functioning correctly
Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and wider theatre team during procedures
Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols at all times
Support patient safety through accurate instrument counts and documentation
Work collaboratively with:
Surgeons
Anaesthetists
ODPs
Circulating staff
Participate in pre- and post-operative care processes
Respond effectively in emergency or high-pressure situations
Maintain compliance with clinical governance and NHS standards
Key Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of cardiac surgical procedures and instrumentation
Excellent understanding of aseptic technique
Ability to anticipate surgical needs proactively
High level of attention to detail and patient safety awareness
Ability to work effectively in fast-paced high-acuity environments
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Qualifications & Requirements
Registered Nurse (RGN) with valid Nursing and Midwifery Council registration or qualified Operating Department Practitioner (ODP)
Proven experience as a Scrub Nurse within cardiac theatres (essential)
Minimum 12mths NHS experience required
Up-to-date mandatory training and compliance
Flexibility to work day shifts. Nights and Weekends may be available
