Role Summary

As the Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator at Howard University Hospital you will partner with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager to drive quality and improve outcomes across every discipline involved in the care of the injured patient. Reporting to the Director of Trauma Services you will coordinate and facilitate our multidisciplinary trauma performance improvement (PI) program leading peer review analyzing registry data identifying variances and ensuring loop closure on the issues that matter most to patient safety and Level I Trauma Center designation.

What Youll Do

Performance Improvement Program Leadership

  • Implement and maintain a multidisciplinary trauma performance improvement (PI) program aligned with regulatory standards and Level I Trauma Center requirements
  • Partner with trauma program leadership to ensure ongoing compliance with American College of Surgeons (ACS) and other applicable trauma center designation standards
  • Lead and support initiatives to improve trauma care quality patient safety and operational efficiency across the continuum of care

Peer Review & Outcomes Reporting

  • Coordinate and support trauma peer review morbidity and mortality (M&M) meetings and outcomes reporting
  • Identify validate and document trauma-related variances complications and quality indicators
  • Track trends follow-up actions and ensure loop closure on identified performance issues

Clinical Review & Quality Surveillance

  • Conduct clinical rounds and concurrent chart reviews to assess care quality and identify improvement opportunities in real time
  • Monitor adherence to hospital and trauma policies procedures and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines
  • Contribute to the development and revision of trauma clinical practice guidelines

Data Analysis & Documentation

  • Analyze trauma data and generate reports using the trauma registry and other data systems to support decision-making
  • Maintain accurate secure documentation of PI activities including meeting records case reviews and follow-up actions
  • Prepare progress reports dashboards and presentations for trauma leadership and hospital committees

Education Research & Professional Engagement

  • Participate in trauma-related research education and professional organizations to support program development and continuous learning
  • Coordinate trauma PIrelated meetings conferences and special activities

Compliance & Regulatory

  • Ensure all PI activities align with professional standards regulatory agency requirements and institutional policies
  • Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program Howard University Code of Ethics Health Sciences Standards of Conduct and HIPAA
  • Attend all mandatory compliance training including HIPAA Privacy training
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of patients families and staff

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Masters Degree in Emergency/Trauma Critical Care or related field strongly preferred
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the District of Columbia (or eligibility)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association
  • Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) certification required within one (1) year of hire
  • Minimum five (5) years of nursing experience in Emergency Trauma or Critical Care
  • Minimum three (3) years of quality improvement experience
  • Working knowledge of trauma registry systems with the ability to abstract data for reports presentations and research
  • Working knowledge of ICD-10 medical coding
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word Excel PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Strong analytical problem-solving organizational and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • TCRN certification at time of hire
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical performance improvement
  • Familiarity with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) trauma center verification process
  • Experience with the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP)
  • Experience with statistical analysis software and data visualization tools

This is a full-time exempt position. Salary range: $75000 $99000 annually commensurate with experience and qualifications.
