Hunter New England Local Health District is seeking an experienced and motivated Sexual Health Medicine Staff Specialist or GP VMO to join the HNELHD Sexual Health Service.
A rewarding clinical role within a supportive and collegial multidisciplinary team providing high quality evidence based patient focused sexual health services to admitted and non admitted patients as well as their families and carers.
You will be primarily responsible for the management of sexually transmitted infections and HIV based at the Newcastle Pacific Sexual Health Clinic. There are also opportunities for involvement in a broader scope of Sexual Health Medicine including transgender healthcare viral hepatitis treatment primary care support undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and clinical research depending on skills and interests.
HNELHD Sexual Health is a network of clinics located across the Hunter Lower Mid North Coast and New England regions delivering free confidential sexual health services with a strong focus on priority populations.
The successful applicant will be primarily based at the Pacific Sexual Health Clinic (The Pacific Clinic) located within the Newcastle Community Health Centre Hunter Street Newcastle West. The clinic is a major service hub for the region and is recognised for providing inclusive non judgmental and accessible care.

The Pacific Clinic offers:
Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) HIV and Hepatitis B and C
HIV treatment ongoing care counselling and support
Sexual health related counselling
Vaccination for Hepatitis A Hepatitis B and mpox for eligible clients
Outreach services in partnership with community organisations including ACON Hunter
Key Responsibilities
Provide expert evidence based clinical care in Sexual Health Medicine
Manage STIs and HIV in outpatient and community based settings
Deliver patient centred culturally safe care to individuals families and carers
Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure continuity and quality of care
Contribute to health promotion prevention and outreach initiatives
Participate in teaching supervision and mentoring of medical students and trainees
Engage in clinical governance quality improvement and service development activities
Ensure compliance with NSW Ministry of Health policies legislation and HNELHD procedures
Essential Selection Criteria
Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist in Sexual Health Medicine
Fellowship of the Australasian Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine (FAChSHM) or specialist qualification in a related medical specialty such as:
- FRACGP
- FAFPHM
- FRACP
A primary medical degree registrable with AHPRA
Demonstrated medical expertise with recent and comprehensive experience in Sexual Health Medicine
Strong commitment to patient focused equitable and inclusive care
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
