Responsibilities

The Senior Underwriter is a part of the D&O underwriting segment for Berkley Select. This role evaluates risk characteristics to drive potential business opportunities within the team philosophy and guidelines.

Key responsibilities include:

Broker Management

  • Manage key and/or target broker relationships and expectations.
  • Manage the expectations of and communicate underwriting decisions requirements and philosophies to brokerage community.
  • Maintain producer / agency contact log in electronic databases.
  • Quarterly travel required (when permitted by WR Berkley)

Underwriting Duties

  • Assist in distributing business opportunities to underwriting team members to achieve efficient and effective underwriting (based on work flow ability and priority).
  • Provide final approval and guidance on risk analysis presented by members of the underwriting department in accordance with authority levels.
  • Evaluate risk characteristics of submissions to determine business opportunities in accordance with guidelines and company philosophy.
  • Price design and recommend policy format for quoted submissions.
  • Review underwriting documents for accuracy prior to their release to brokers and/or company clients.
  • Discuss analyze and interpret Berkley Select policy forms and coverage issues.

Product Development

  • Suggest and/or develop policy endorsements to improve Berkley Selects competitive advantage in the market.
  • Provide research assistance in analyzing competitor forms.
  • Discuss analyze and interpret changes to competitor forms and underwriting appetites.

Leadership Duties

  • Assist with training junior members of the underwriting and/or support staff on underwriting procedures.
  • Provide assistance to management with training and education of the underwriting staff

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree and 4-8 years of management liability underwriting experience.
  • Must have knowledge of management liability insurance policy forms applicability and issues.
  • Must be able to conceptualize and analyze financial statements at a college level.
  • Good written and oral communications skills including the ability to compose various types of business correspondence.
  • Must be able to manage multiple priorities have good analytical skills and the ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Must be customer service oriented; a team player; willing to learn; organized; detail oriented and flexible.
  • Working knowledge of PCs and other software programs (including Microsoft Word and Excel)

The position is based in Chicago; in-office four days per week.

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full time regular employees which for this role includes:

Base Salary Range: $115000 - 125000.

The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the scope complexity and location of the role; the skills education training credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.

This role is eligible to participate in the annual discretionary bonus program.
