The UK has long been an important international development actor driven by UK policy and significant ODA investments as well as the influence of its international NGOs and academic institutions. However the sector has undergone substantial change in over the past year. Aid budgets have been sharply reduced and many UK-based INGOs are navigating complex debates around decolonisation and localisation prompting shifts in their operating models and partnerships. This comes alongside a rise in far-right narratives and claims that public support for international development is diminishing.

Despite this challenging landscape the UK remains a strong and consistent advocate for WFP and continues to be one of its most important partners currently ranking as the fourth largest donor.

The London office represents WFPs interests in the UK with government parliament the media the private sector NGOs and academic. Our role is to inform influence and build understanding of the global humanitarian context a function that has become even more critical as the operating environment grows more complex and politically sensitive. We are housed with other UN humanitarian agencies and receive regular high-level visits from policy and country teams.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The main responsibilities of the Fellow will be to:

• Lead a policy-oriented research project on the future of UK development policy identifying opportunities for WFP London to maximise its influence across government Parliament NGOs and think tanks.
• Analyse trends and evidence from country offices and policy teams to provide a strong evidence base on the implications of UK funding cuts on WFP operations to inform our advocacy and communications.
• Work with colleagues to deepen relationships with NGOs think tanks and other key stakeholders attending relevant debates seminars and sector events to strengthen our engagement.
• Contribute to core team activities including strategic planning weekly meetings and other tasks as required to support WFP Londons external relations and advocacy work.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Be a Masters student or a graduate; and
• Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency/level C). Working knowledge of another official UN language (French Spanish Arabic Chinese Russian plus Portuguese) is an asset but not essential.

SOFT SKILLS

• Excellent analytical and research skills;
• Work effectively in a multi-cultural environment and international organisation including with remote colleagues;
• Strong communication skills; and
• Motivated team spirit and contributed to an inclusive and sound working environment (team player).

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the assignment the selected candidate should have:

• An excellent understanding of the UKs advocacy and development policy landscape as well as the wider political context;
• Experience of engaging with stakeholders (parliamentary think tanks NGOs); and
• An excellent understanding of the UN WFPs role in a changing development and humanitarian landscape.

TYPE OF ASSIGNMENT

This opportunity is particularly well-suited for students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in an international organization. It offers valuable exposure to WFPs operations and the chance to contribute meaningfully to its mission.

The selected candidate will receive IT equipment and training material; however financial compensation and medical coverage are not provided by WFP. Applicants may seek alternative funding opportunities such as university grants or external scholarships to support their assignment.
