Description

The role of the academic mentor is to foster the academic skills of students with varying levels of academic ability. The skill-building focus of mentors will include the five BullsLearn Academic Skills: Reading Writing Time-Management/Organization Note-Taking and Study/Test-Taking skills. Mentor sessions will emphasize the development of time-management/organization skills and prepare students to effectively complete assignments. Using advised learning and academic strategies students will have additional time in sessions to apply their assignment completion plan.



Responsibilities

Job Duties

  • Student-Athlete Expectations & Accountability:Academic Mentors support student-athletes by reinforcing academic expectations and accountability standards established by the Athletics academic support program. Mentors monitor attendance preparedness and engagement during mentoring sessions encourage responsible academic behaviors and communicate concerns or trends to staff as appropriate.
  • Caseload Management:Academic Mentors manage an assigned caseload of student-athletes by maintaining consistent mentoring appointments documenting session outcomes and tracking progress toward academic goals. Mentors are responsible for effective time management punctuality and maintaining accurate records in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Building Academic Skills:Academic Mentors facilitate one-on-one sessions focused on developing the five BullsLearn Academic Skills: reading writing time-management/organization note-taking and study/test-taking skills. Sessions emphasize time-management and organizational strategies assignment planning and the practical application of advised learning strategies to support student-athletes in completing coursework and improving overall academic performance.


Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for this role are a bachelors degree. Preferred candidates will have experience in mentorship roles within educational settings (particularly collegiate sports).

Degree Equivalency Clause: Four years of direct experience for a bachelors degree.
Senate Bill 1310- The Florida Senate ( is conditional upon meeting all employment eligibility requirements in the U.S.
SB 1310: Substitution of Work Experience for Postsecondary Education Requirements
A public employer may include a postsecondary degree as a baseline requirement only as an alternative to the number of years of direct experience required not to exceed:
(a) Two years of direct experience for an associate degree;
(b) Four years of direct experience for a bachelors degree;
(c) Six years of direct experience for a masters degree;
(d) Seven years of direct experience for a professional degree; or
(e) Nine years of direct experience for a doctoral degree
Related work experience may not substitute for any required licensure certification or registration required for the position of employment as established by the public employer and indicated in the advertised description of the position of employment.
Minimum Qualifications that require a high school diploma are exempt from SB 1310.
