We are seeking a visionary and academically rigorous Head of Biology to lead a flagship science this leadership role you will be responsible for the strategic direction of the Biology curriculum fostering a culture of high expectations and scientific inquiry that inspires students to pursue careers at the forefront of the life sciences.

The Department & Leadership

• You will lead a team of specialist teachers and technicians fostering a collaborative environment focused on pedagogical excellence and research-informed practice.

• The department benefits from well-equipped laboratories and a location that offers unique opportunities for local ecological fieldwork and marine studies.

• As a middle leader you will play a crucial role in the schools Wider Leadership Team contributing to the development of STEM initiatives across the academy.

Core Responsibilities

1. Strategic Leadership: Designing and overseeing a high-impact Biology curriculum across Key Stages 3 4 and 5 ensuring seamless progression and the mastery of complex biological concepts.

2. Quality of Education: Monitoring and evaluating the standard of teaching and learning within the department through regular coaching work scrutiny and lesson observations.

3. Academic Achievement: Analyzing student data to identify trends and implement effective intervention strategies ensuring all learners meet or exceed their progress targets.

4. Post-16 Excellence: Taking a lead role in the delivery and management of A-Level Biology providing expert guidance for students aspiring to study Medicine Dentistry and Veterinary Sciences.

5. Resource Management: Overseeing the departmental budget ensuring laboratories are stocked with modern equipment and that all practical work adheres to the highest safety standards (CLEAPSS).

The Successful Candidate We are looking for an experienced educator with a track record of driving academic progress and a passion for developing the next generation of scientists. Requirements include:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a strong honours degree in Biology or a related life science.

• Leadership Experience: Previous experience as a Lead Teacher or Second in Department is highly desirable with a proven ability to motivate and mentor colleagues.

• Subject Expertise: A deep understanding of current biological research and the ability to translate complex topics into an engaging and accessible curriculum.

• Analytical Mindset: Proficiency in using data to drive departmental improvement and the ability to lead on the implementation of whole-school literacy and numeracy strategies within Science.
