Job Summary

  • Purpose
    • The purpose of the job description is to establish and define the authority accountability reporting relationships responsibilities duties and measures of performance of the CNC Operator Level II of LMT Defense.
  • Basic Function
    • The function of the CNC Operator Level II is to operate and adjust CNC Mill and Lathe tools to perform standard and repetitive sequences of operations where programs are provided and setups are made and maintain by others.
  • Reporting Relationships
    • The CNC Operator Level II reports to the Production Shift Supervisor assigned to his/her area.
    • The CNC Operator Level II has no supervisory or management authority.
  • Job Requirements
    • To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to complete all areas outlined for this position in a satisfactory manner.     • Education
      • Required: High School/GED diploma or vocational school equivalent
      • Preferred: Trade Certification
    • Experience
      • Preferred: 2 years of machining experience or machining certification from an accredited trade school.
      • Required: Computer literacy specific to operating CNC machines.
      • Required: Experience with machining techniques and methods of CNC Mill and Lathes as well as tool operating procedures and blue print reading.
Skills Knowledge Abilities
      • Strong mechanical aptitude
      • Basic knowledge of hand tools and mechanical devices
      • Advanced knowledge of machining processes (drilling milling turning)
      • Capability to use precision measuring devices micrometers calipers height stands
      • Competence to measure to .001
      • Ability to quickly learn how to make adjustments to tool offsets to correct feature discrepancies
      • A basic understanding of cutting tools with some experience to judge if they need changed
      • Experience with Mazak machines a plus willingness to learn M and G code programming also
      • Possess strong attention to detail and communication skills
      • Must be able to follow written instructions from Work Instruction Sheets
      • Strong blueprint reading skills is required with ability to check parts for conformance
      • Must be able to sign and abide by Companys employee manual and confidentiality agreement
      • Required to successfully complete a background check job physical and drug screening
      • Must be able to work well with others that may be offering assistance
      • Ability to adjust items in a program such as tool offsets and part offsets without assistance
      • Must be able to use basic logic and common sense to trouble shoot machining problems
      • Have the ability to look thru a program and be able to comprehend what it is doing
      • Must own all the tools required to do your job completely
      • This person has to have the confidence to assist a number 1 making good decisions
      • Complete comprehension of complex production blueprints is required
      • This person is always on the lookout for ways to improve work area for production
      • This operator makes rate daily with scrap less than 3%

While performing the duties and responsibilities of this position the employee is occasionally required to walk use foot/feet to operate machine climb or balance stoop kneel crouch or crawl reach above shoulders and move from place to place. The incumbent will regularly stand sit and talk and listen and will frequently use hands to finger handle or touch. Specific vision requirements for this position include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
During the performance of his/her work duties the incumbent will be required to occasionally lift up to 35 pounds and will frequently lift up to 25 pounds such as moving parts from material storage and moving parts in and out of work area.

The employee works in a manufacturing environment and is occasionally exposed to wet humid conditions and toxic or caustic chemicals. He/she is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and work near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is loud.

  • Authority
    • The CNC Operator Level II receives authority from the Production Shift Supervisor assigned to his/her area to take any reasonable action necessary to stop all work being done in an unsafe manner and carry out the responsibilities assigned so long as such action does not deviate from established corporate policy and is consistent with sound business judgement.
  • Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.
    • Operate CNC Machine centers to produce machined parts.
    • Maintain quality and safety standards. Performing self-inspection of parts to ensure specs and following NRB process when parts are not to specifications.
    • Adhering to quality assurance standards.
    • Keeping accurate records by documenting and communicating actions irregularities and continuing needs. Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.
    • Maintaining maintenance and repairs of the machines as well as other equipment and supplies. Following manufacturers instructions troubleshooting malfunctions and calling for repairs.
    • Verifies settings and communicate with Supervisor when adjustments are made.
    • Updates job knowledge by voluntarily participating in educational opportunities.
    • Accomplishes organizational goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
    • Keep workstation and equipment clean to include 5S daily and weekly duties verified by signing off cleaning schedule
    • Train other CNC Level I machinist on various jobs or assist other operators with repairs or replacement work if necessary.
    • Perform basic machine set ups and execute first piece checks as needed.
    • Other duties as assigned.
  • Measures of Performance
    • The CNC Operator Level II of LMT Defense shall be deemed to be performing in an acceptable manner when the following have been accomplished:
      • All of the above skills knowledge and abilities have been retained and demonstrated.
      • All of the above duties and responsibilities have been retained and demonstrated.
      • Completes all jobs on time with rates at 93% or above and material scrap is at or below 2%.
      • All required paperwork and other documents are turned in as requested.
      • Completes all required documents in the appropriate areas.
      • CNC Operator acts and presents himself professionally while working on the job site.
      • Consistently displays a sense of urgency in completing all assigned tasks.
